I think it's fair. If any big school or NFL wants him then 2 Million is chump change, but it will dissuade peers from offering him more money to come to their school if he is successful. You cannot stop upward movement, but you can keep a UCF or Houston from taking him should that come up.

That article is absurd, if a P5 school had done this it would have been labeled as smart. Why end up like Arkansas State with one and done coaches? Just common sense of Southern Miss part

yep....the current regime is doing things correctly...

the bottom line is protecting one's interest....

if a coach is that valuable to someone else, then so be it....let them foot the bill....

it's a smart move and necessary...

and I'll just say, it's about fk'n time....

It's not absurd at all if he actually wants to stay in Hattiesburg for 3 (!) short years.

And I know that we live in a very materialistic culture, and this will sound stupid to many of you, but people my age actually care about other things besides money. Money is just a means to an end. It means nothing in and of itself. It's what you do with it that counts, and I don't give you any credit for just stacking it up. Crazy talk, I know.

Didn't ASU have two 10 win season during that time? Didn't they win 9 last season? Is that really so bad?

I applaud McG for this contract. It provides two things:

1) USM always has the upper hand and the university's best interests in mind

2) Evidence that Jay Hopson REALLY wanted to be our coach

Exactly, Dawg.. if any "big name" school had done this, it'd be labelled a brilliant move by the university.

he defined rural decay/g5/human values/lottery winner all in one post....it was impressive....

I think that article is "absurd" and obviously Southern Miss had leverage or they wouldn't have been able to get him to sign that deal. I think it's good for all parties involved, and hope that Hopson can continue to get Southern Miss back to glory.

RE: Underdog Dynasty calls Hopson's buyout "absurd" - Nugget49er - 02-04-2016 01:19 PM

To me this seems the equivalent of the conference-school relationship and Grant of Rights deals. Make it exorbitant and nobody will ever leave. Until they do. Things like this end up in court and get settled, but until then, USM should feel like the winner.

If Jay Hopson goes on to put up an 11-2 type season winning CUSA going away, and a P5 comes and poaches him, I doubt Southern Miss fans will complain one bit.

You don't want an extreme example like we had of coaches leaving every season, but generally you want your coaches to be desired by P5 schools. What Southern Miss has to avoid is someone like a Central Florida type from coming after Hopson.

RE: Underdog Dynasty calls Hopson's buyout "absurd" - WKUYG - 02-04-2016 01:32 PM

The first contract with a coach who ends up winning is the only time the schools has the advantage...

after that each of us are usually at a disadvantage. This is just like life if you are wanted by more than one you have the advantage. If this is the best call you are getting and really want it....

you take what is offered

If your intentions are to move on at the first chance then the school has a right to recover some of their expenses in training you and giving you that chance

RE: Underdog Dynasty calls Hopson's buyout "absurd" - usm99 - 02-04-2016 01:34 PM

I think it was the right thing to do for USM. With Hopson's success at Alcorn St along with how USM is set up for this year (now if it only plays out like we are hoping/expecting), I could see a P5 school coming in after year 1 and trying to hire him away. If Hopson gets the job done that $2 million will hopefully keep him here for 3 years but as has been stated that is chump change if an SEC school comes calling but at least USM will get something out of it besides the give or take $350k or so that we got when Fedora and Monken each left. I realize both of them left after 3 or more years but this hopefully keeps us from looking for a new HC in less than 3 years

It is painfully obvious that the author has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.

I had to click onhis name and saw he covers appy state. No wonder. a sun belt writer taking a jab at cusa.
A better article would be how it has helped slow down the raping of coaches from arkie state and how the buyout stopped it. Its the coming thing for stronger g5 programs.

Good ADs are apparently creative, know their school's strengths / weaknesses, and are tight-lipped. I'm as impressed with USM as I have been a while, and nothing we're accomplishing is at Coach's expense. That's just a goofy claim.
