Bobby Mann said the farm (solar panel farm) would "suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland..."

You'll have to address this with the East Carolina coastal folks. App is actually a pioneer when it comes to clean energy.

The quotes used in that article were clearly cherry picked and blown out of perspective, but hilarious none the less.

I live in Pasquotank County and solar farms have been spreading like crazy in my area.
Just recently they cut down an entire forest and then decided to put the solar panels elsewhere after all the trees were already cut down.
They did decide to put the solar panels on hundreds of acres of farmland though, so that's land that won't be used for crops anymore.
The solar farm no doubt reduced the values of homes in the area as well.

The real kicker is that none of the power that the solar panels generate is even used by the county. Instead, the power is routed up to Newport News Virginia.

The "science teacher" said that the panels would affect photosynthesis in nearby plants. We are doomed if this person taught science to actual people.
And it doesnt matter if the quotes were cherry picked because they are just ignorant and illogical in or out of context.

Hard to defend this, cherry picked or not, but Slate.com or Salon.com had a nice article about this it seems, but I don't have time to track it down. The article gets into some of the economics of it.

There are idiots at every City Council meeting, and frankly some of the council members themselves are idiots.

When AState wanted to get the main road that rain by our football stadium renamed Red Wolf Blvd last year, some idiot got in front of the council and insisted that the large amounts of "tourists" we get from Memphis every year would get lost and end up 20 miles to the South by mistake.

The measure barely passed.

Idiot. You'd think he'd know the sun recharges itself at night.
