Idaho rocking new helmets - nsavandal09 - 11-28-2015 01:31 PM

It's been a pretty good week for the vandals. The women's bball team's only loss is by 8 to top 15 Duke and should get some top 25 votes, the men's team is 4-2 and a donor stepped up to buy a new set of helmets. I hate our old script Vandals logo and have been skeptical of the silver and gold combo but this actually looks pretty great with the black border and new V. The best part is the tribute to Jace Malek with the 99 sticker. Hopefully we can end the season on a high note with a win over TSU!

Which TSU is it you're playing? Texas Southern University or Tarleton State University?

I thought your schedule had you playing Texas State University (TXST).

Seriously, this was a major issue during our name change. Texas Southern was pretty adamant about keeping TSU as their acronym, so we are pretty active in insisting on TXST as ours.

04-cheers

Love the classic look of those. Personally I'm tired of all the hip-hop look uniforms and matte black helmets with huge logo's. App has been wearing all black for a long time, but it is one of our primary colors. It seems everyone in the nation has an all black uni these days, regardless of their colors. I'm ready for App to go back to the classic gold pants (not yellar) with black tops for home games. WEar all black on Black Saturday only.

Helmets are nice. Mascot is cool, too -- Vandals.
Another reason I like college sports.

From school website:

Idaho's student-athletes go by a name earned nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Hec Edmunson, whose teams played defense with such intensity and ferocity that sports writers said they "vandalized" their opponents.

The mark made by that 1917 team went far deeper than wins and losses on the court. In 1917, Harry Lloyd "Jazz" McCarty- a writer for the Argonaut- subtly tagged the team with a new nickname in a pre-game write-up. "The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of 'Vandals ' have the best material that has ever carried the 'I' into action." McCarty's indirect suggestion stuck. By 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in their push to have Vandals officially adopted as the nickname for all Idaho teams.

The University of Idaho is the only institution of higher education to use the mascot of the Vandal. The nickname exemplifies the spirit of the University in more than just athletics; as University of Idaho Vandals, we are fiercely competitive and independent thinkers and doers.
