Rivalry Games - SouthernMissSNu - 08-26-2015 11:06 AM

What rivalry game are y'all most looking forward to this year?

I miss the former rivalries that were destroyed/put on hold by conference realignment and destructive decisions by different boards of trustees: Battle for the Bell (Tulane), Black and Blue Bowl (Memphis), East Carolina, and UAB.

But as far as this year goes, I'm excited for our in-state rivalry game with Misstake, and for our matchup in Ruston with LA Tech- The Rivalry in Dixie. The fans that I met from Ruston last year were all extremely nice and knowledgeable, yet had the right amount of trash talk for an enjoyable rivalry.

In order:

MT vs Vanderbilt
MT vs Marshall
MT vs Western Ky

RE: Rivalry Games - mufanatehc - 08-26-2015 11:13 AM

Our only rivalry game on the schedule this season is Ohio.

I think WKU and MT will turn into one. I really miss playing ECU hated loosing them the rest not so much

RE: Rivalry Games - D lot Dawg - 08-26-2015 11:24 AM

Last year was the first Southern Miss/ La Tech game I didn't get to see in person since the series was renewed. Those first two non conference games were tough to watch at times, but to me really established a solid base to move into CUSA.

Looking forward to putting the Cajuns down one more time before letting that series remain dormant for a while. Enjoyed my trip to Cajun country last year and hope some of their fans travel to Ruston.

Besides those two I can't think of any game that could remotely resemble a rivalry game. I am looking forward to finally playing Middle Tennessee, and also Rice because I live in Houston.

Rice @ Texas
Rice @ Baylor

If we three keep going at it the way we have the first couple of years then I would tend to agree.

I'm looking forward to ODU, I feel that that will quickly build into a pretty good given our (relative) proximity and many similarities between us.

Oh, and the whole double-cancel thing.

I can't express my disappointment when I realized that that game was scheduled for the weekend of my sister's wedding. Seriously... who gets married during football season!?

RE: Rivalry Games - OwlFamily - 08-26-2015 11:35 AM

Shula Bowl of course as it involves my team.

I also look forward to the 100 miles of hate between WKU and MTSU.

The rest of us are so new to each other its going to take some time. Personally I would love to have a permanent crossover game with Rice since were both owls.

RE: Rivalry Games - WKUApollo - 08-26-2015 11:39 AM

Our out of conference games are against teams we've either never played or have only played two or three times (IU-2 games, LSU-1 game, Vandy-3 games, Miami of Ohio - never played them), although the Vandy game is huge, given how close they are to us.

As to in-conference games, my personal order would be:

Marshall - they have history and will be looking to avenge last year's loss.
LaTech - they have history and we will be looking to avenge the spanking we received from them last year.
MTSU - They are our closest conference mate and they hate us.
FAU - They seem to always have our number and they are my pick to be the team to destroy some CUSA teams' hopes this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see them at the top of the CUSA Division standings come November.

Yes, I realize MTSU fans hate us but it only started being a big game to me personally in the last handful of years. I'm not old enough to remember the rivalry games with MTSU during the OVC period 40-50 years ago.

Texas, Baylor, Louisiana Tech

Yet, your sig is all about the yesteryear of western basketball. Just curious why that would matter to you personally but the longest running history of two teams in this conference is only recently of relevance to you?

And let's not be coy. You guys hate us too.

I'm not really old enough to know about any of that past either, but would venture to say that without that history the rivalry wouldn't be nearly as much fun today without it. Just my two cents.

RE: Rivalry Games - pilot172000 - 08-26-2015 12:59 PM

USM- Rivalry in Dixie is my favorite game every year
Rice- Google the stats between Us and Them. Its conspiracy theory scary.
UTSA- Good ole fashion hate wrapped in a corn tortilla slathered in spite.
WKY- see above and about 40 threads on this site.

RE: Rivalry Games - NanoDawg - 08-26-2015 01:04 PM

I agreed with what pilot mentioned above.
I started loving/hating the Rice games due to the point swing from one year to the other. It is just difficult to get into trash talking with those nerds down in Houston. They are just too damn nice.

I concur. Rice is a great school and a wonderful football program. Its hard to hate them with all they are doing down there. I still hope we drop 70 on them again.

While I agree nothing on the conference schedule approaches "rivalry", I am looking forward to the Louisiana Tech game for some home-field payback for last year's game in Ruston.

On that note, Fly Eagles Fly. (Once we figure out what the hell Chip Kelly is thinking).

I can't wait for y'all to get your team back to reignite the Southern Miss v UAB Rivalry that was beginning to form.

Two totally different things. My sig is about my school's athletic accomplishments. The reason MTSU is only recently relevant to me, as I stated before, is because I've only been exposed to MTSU in football as a conference mate in the few short years that WKU has been FBS. Before 6 years ago, WKU and MTSU hadn't played football at the same level and in the same conference for 35 years which was a few years before I entered WKU as a freshman. Remember, I said "to me personally".

Also, I didn't say that WKU fans don't hate MTSU. I stated a reason you're a rival is because your fans hate us. That's typically a cornerstone of considering someone a rival. If ya'll loved us, it'd be difficult to consider you a rival.
