Temple signs stadium extension for 2 years ... - Philly Brian - 08-19-2015 02:52 AM

Temple has signed two one year leases with the Eagles for 2018 and 2019. Temple has to give the Eagles advanced notice if they intend to use the stadium for these two years. Temple and the Eagles also agreed to a partnership in which the Eagles will promote Temple football.

Temple currently pays $1 mil per year. I doubt that the new lease is going to increase a lot. My guess is maybe $1.5 mil per year. Still that's a lot for 6 games.
The Temple president says that the school is still considering a campus stadium. He says that the school can afford the stadium.

He has yet to sell the Trustees and the city on the stadium idea.
I would imagine that if we beat state, his sales job will be a lot easier!
So in a nutshell, the amended lease gives Temple more time.

The TU Pres says that no matter what, a decision must be made within the next year. (Actually by the end of this year.)
I don't know if it's fair but the success of the team this season could be a factor ...

A few other comments. The TU Pres is very much in favor of a campus stadium. In the interview on Tuesday he spoke about the desire of students to attend campus games. Public transport or driving takes students about 40 mins to get to the stadium.

He also talked about how nice it would be to bring the alumni back to the campus.

It looks like he has private and corporate donors lined up. So we have the land and we have the money.

The Trustees will need convincing.

We are in for a big fight with city officials but that's true for every big project that gets built in the city.

----To be completely accurate this NOT a 2 year extension but 2 separate 1 year options to extend the lease. This gives the University tremendous flexibility regarding the decision to build on OCS.

1-2 mil a year is outrageous. Hoping temple can score the on campus stadium it'll be a major improvement in revenue and atmosphere.

With interest rates rising, with all-union labor construction, with the default possibility of municipal or state-backed bonds, an on-campus stadium is likely to cost $250 million or more. That is a pretty steep price for 6 home dates per year. Temple fans might suggest that the soccer and women's lacrosse teams will play there as well, but it will cost more to open the stadium for those events than the revenue that will be raised from an attendance of 82.

What a shame

+Graduation and other ceremonies
+Concerts and other shows (The Liacouras Center is a major entertainment venue in Philly)
+High school and other sports. Could be a great venue for soccer and lacrosse (NCAA, pro, etc.)

250 mil? Based on what? Costs more expensive in philly than elsewhere? Ucf was 70mil and Orlando city building a state of the art soccer stadium with a roof for shade
Over 100 mil. Didn't Minnesota just build a massive dome stadium for 250 mil?

Construction costs in Philly are at least 3x higher than in Orlando.

There are exceptions, I guess, but I can't imagine any school being better off playing off campus. Despite the Liberty Bowl structure itself which is adequate & the Tiger Lane atmosphere, Memphis would be much better off playing on campus - for all the reasons everyone plays on campus - atmosphere, alumni, student, & corporate participation, attendance, & contributed $$$. Hope Temple gets it one.

RE: Temple signs stadium extension for 2 years ... - GeminiCoog - 08-19-2015 09:28 PM

This does give you some time to figure out whether or not you (as in your school) want an on-campus stadium. I'll say it definitely helps. Therefore, I hope Temple gets one by the time the second one-year lease is up.

RE: Temple signs stadium extension for 2 years ... - JHG722 - 08-19-2015 09:35 PM

Gemini, everyone wants it, but we're not in Nebraska or Kansas where we can just go okay, and plop down a stadium anywhere we want. It required moving our olympic sports to another area. It will require closing off a street which requires city approval. There are a ton of factors to take into account considering there are people that live near campus who are not students. As much as we'd like to, we can't just annex an entire neighborhood.

It will get done, but it requires thorough planning.

Thanks for filling me in on what needs to happen. 04-cheers

I think that the Temple president is looking at a realistic timeline to sell the Trustees on the stadium. He will then probably need additional time to convince city officials.

$250 million is too high. I would say that we will budget around $150 million and be happy with whatever that gets us ...

This same project was floated back in 1998. The cost estimate back then was $60 million. Our president back then turned it down saying that he was tired out from all of the lobbying he had to do for the bball arena.

When he retired he called his handling of football his worse failure as president. Between firing of Bruce Arians (now an NFL head coach), his hiring of 3 horrible coaches who went 38-151, and also turning down a wonderful campus stadium proposal with a bargain price of $60 million, I would agree with him.

RE: Temple signs stadium extension for 2 years ... - JHG722 - 08-20-2015 02:42 AM

Brian, that's not even logical. The Liacouras Center was $107M in 2015 dollars. A football stadium that seats over 3x as many people isn't going to be less money.

Look at Rutgers' football expansion. It cost $102M to just expand their stadium. $150M is likely the minimum for a bare bones stadium. Hopefully, we sell naming rights and we build a nicer stadium than that.

RE: Temple signs stadium extension for 2 years ... - Wilkie01 - 08-20-2015 05:23 AM

1998 Papa John's Cardinal Stadium 42,000 seats cost $63 million.

2013 Expanded to 55,000 seats cost $72 million.
The longer you wait the more it will cost.

False. Ucf bball arena cost almost 2x as much as our football stadium. Both built at the same time.

150 is most I could see temple paying for an OCS and you would get a tremendous stadium for that cost.

RE: Temple signs stadium extension for 2 years ... - Knights_of_UCF - 08-20-2015 08:20 AM

Temple guys comparing your potential stadium to renovations made by P5 schools is silly. They get 20-40x more money annually than we do. That's why their renovations are 100mil when our whole stadium cost less than that. It's comparing a Chevy metro to a Mercedes and just a fact of life at this point.
