The 15 worst football attendance schools for 2014-15 - MUHERD76 - 07-22-2015 10:28 PM

Average per game....Amazingly, the Mac leads everyone with 8 members in the top 15 and remember the Mac is a 12 team league. As for CUSA/MWC, we both have 2 while the Sunbelt has 3. Interesting to say the least. We have some work to do but I think FIU/FAU will draw better this year.

1. Akron..9,170
2. Ball State.. 9,389
3. FIU...11,966
4. New Mexico St...12,269
5. Idaho...12,886
6. Kent State..13,544
7. Northern Illinois (NIU)...13,563
8. FAU...14,122
9. Georgia State...15,006
10. Eastern Michigan....15,025
11. San Jose St......15,068
12. Bowling Green....15,228
13. Western Michigan...15,625
14. UNLV...15,674
15. Miami, Ohio...15,906

So basically the MAC + a few others.

The Florida teams are going to round the corner eventually. I'm surprised that NIU is there, though. I thought they were more popular.

Still feel bad for Akron, too.

Eastern Michigan is known for getting "creative" with their numbers.

A few years ago they averaged something like 2,500 which was something like bottom third in FCS, top 25 in DII and top ten in DIII.

I thought it was a top ten. Are we shooting for extra credit points? 03-wink

FAU will have the Miami game sell-out. So that will help.

Couple takeaways..
1. Not suprised SJSU & UNLV are on the list. They've struggled with attendance for a long time, basically forever.

2. Is NIU's attendance really that bad? Kind of shocked about that, especially given the success they've had. However, is this generally how it is? Has it always been that bad?

FIU and FAU have the same potential as USF and UCF.

No wonder NIU fans want out of the MAC. That conference has no aspirations.

It's not a top 10 list. That is an incorrectly used modifier. Sorry for invoking grammar nazi, but it is a pet peeve. I do not know how the trend got started, but you see it everywhere now. To illustrate just how wrong it sounds, drop the "10"... You're left with " top worst". That is a double set of completely contradicting modifiers.

Cliff notes: Drop the "top". It's just " 10 worst".

And it's not the 10 worst, it's the 15 worst.

04-cheers

I really thought SJSU would benefit from the MWC in that department.... shocked to see they haven't turned the corner.

I thought the same thing, Banjo...and some decent football, as of late, I thought, though I haven't really kept up with San Jose since we moved east.

Why are people so enamoured with this topic?

FIU and to a much lesser degree FAU have much greater challenges than do USF and UCF due to their demographics. If you know about Florida migration patterns you know that the West coast of Florida is settled by mid-westerners (Ohio, MI, IN, etc.) and the East coast by northeasterners and Caribbean/S. American immigrants. Clear natural advantage for Tampa over Miami as far as college football attendance is concerned.

This said, as the population of S. Fla matures, the importance of collegial community support will strengthen, but it's going to take time. The hiring of a professional marketing firm will certainly help....and of course, winning will expedite the process. I also find NIU a surprise as they have had recent BCS success and always seem to put a strong product on the field.

For lack of a better word, its almost macabre.

The top of college football is packing in nearly 100k per game. And, if we're being honest, the bottom of college football struggles to put 10k a game in the stands. It doesn't mean much, but for some reason it's interesting to see who it is and question why.

these are probably not butts-in-seats figures.

San Jose has actually benefited. It used to be even worse.

Disagree. Maybe competitively, but not for support. Tampa and Orlando are a lot more normal than Boca and Miami. One is basically an enormous retirement community with transplants, the other is an international city that doesn't support any football very well.

I just cannot imagine either of these schools averaging more than 20,000 fans per game simply because of their locations. There is enough talent in FL though that if they recruit the state well they could definitely be solid competitively though.
