Question for WKU Fans - Side Show Joe - 05-25-2015 01:33 PM

Transfer QB DaMarcus Smith will be academically eligible to play for North Texas this fall. I know he spent a year at WKU before transferring to a junior college. He seemed to be a solid prospect out of high school and is taking care of his business and saying all the right things. I like what I've seen so far. Just wondering if any of you WKU fans can give me some insight about his abilities? UNT really needs a QB. McNulty is back from last season, but he didn't exactly get it done for us last year. Any information on Smith would be appreciated? Thanks.

I think most WKU fans expected him to step in and be the man..... During spring and summer he just could never prove that he had what it took to be a successful college player ( at least at WKU ) his passing was supposed to be his strength, but it was way way behind Brandon D and the few times he did get snaps he didn't look good. Time changes people and I hope he has improved from his time here or you guys won't get much from him...... He has or had promise

Thanks. Doughty is probably the best QB in C-USA if not all of the G5. There is no shame in Smith losing the starting job to him.

Last season, Smith completed 58.5% of his passes, and threw for 2,746 yards. He threw 31 TDs against 8 INTs. It looks like he was getting it done at Butler. I just hope North Texas gets to see that transfer to the FBS level. The Mean Green need someone to step up at the QB spot, if we are going to make any kind of noise in C-USA West.

Smith's biggest problem isn't arm strength or anything physical. He just makes dumb decisions with the football. He had a cannon for an arm and in high school he could get away with a lot of poor decision making because defenses weren't as good. In college however he tends to rely to much on his arm strength. He didn't do well with short passes. And while he can bomb it 70 yards down the field. He will get rattled and throw into double and triple coverage more then checking down his receivers and looking for the open man.

He originally signed as 4* with UCF, then tried to transfer before Frosh season. It was a weird situation, but ended up at WKU since he was from Louisville. Anyway, he was finally eligible after sitting out 2 years (I believe). He was really rusty and had a hard time picking up Petrino's system in Spring ball. Doughty started for Petrino and he never really had a shot. Petrino seemed to express frustration with him about decision-making when asked.

He will probably much better now that he has had regular playing time and more confidence. Definitely has 4* talent, will be interesting to see how he performs. A lot of upside if he has matured....

If you want an honest opinion, he looked absolutely horrible when he was on the field at WKU....He could barely get the snap without bobbling or fumbling the ball away.....I guess maybe he was rusty and this year in JUCO ball where he played, maybe he has improved and at least the rust is gone....I will say he cannot be any worse than he was at WKU for you guys, just would be really scared if you are counting on him to be your starting QB this season....That being said I would like to see him do well for you guys...

I echo 518's opinion. Couldn't even handle shotgun snaps. He does have a cannon. Just don't know what he has between the ears on the field. I'm cheering for the young man. He's had a winding road to Mean Green Country. Hope he does well.

Agree with all assessments above. The Green are getting a freakish athlete with unlimited potential. He went to Seneca HS in Louisville and verbaled with Charlie Strong at Louisville as a Sophomore. He ended up getting injured and missing his entire Jr year. By that time Strong signed Teddy Bridgewater and Smith ended up committing to UCF but never enrolled due to some recruiting improprieties due to his association with Brandon Bender. I was happy when he enrolled at WKU but bottom line appeared to be he couldn't beat out Doughty at QB. Would like to see him do well at NT
