Expensive proposition this bowling thing - gobaseline - 05-06-2015 11:57 PM

So do I understand this correctly? WMU spent almost half a million dollars to get exposure on ESPN to play football?

Is there tangible evidence of WMU making money elsewhere as a result of their participation in the game?

I am guessing that the travel was inflated a touch by the airfare required to get the team AND the band to Boise... Can't imagine those are cheap flights... not to mention the required transportation costs once you get there... quite a large contingent to pay for...

03-hissyfit:banghead:DEITER WOULD BE PROUD OF YOUR GLOOM AND DOOM OUTLOOK. Exposure is what it's all about. Just like any post season basketball tourneys other than the Big Dance. Recruits want to come to whre they have a good chance of being on t.v.

509 people sent there?!?! 305 from the band?! I would opt for less of a band -- like only 100, tops, if any. It's for WMU fans, and nobody would expect a ton there, but long travel times.

Basically we were guaranSheed $475k for the bowl payout. Okay.

What did we spend? $913,542. That, divided by 509 = $1,794.78 per person. With food & hotel for each person, plus air (it's allegedly cheaper than standard booking by way of William Shatner, but more luggage in band & football equipment to carry too), that sounds about right if they're out there for 3(?) days if hotels Aren't free and we're also not going the extra mile on the cheap (nor spending wildly).

+ A $50 stipend (food etc) for each person, for 3 days would be about $76,350.

+ If hotels were not complimentary (but obviously they got a deal at least, RIGHT?) for 120 players + 305 band members + 84 leftover people, which, say, 3 quarters of those 84 share rooms, 1 quarter don't as they are "elite" --> 21 elite rooms + 63 shared rooms of non-band/non-players + 213 for band & players = 297 rooms. Multiply that by, say, $70 out the door due to a deal --> $21k a night x 3 = $63k.

+ Unknown amount for renting a few cars for a few days, plus like, say 3 big buses to use (does the bowl pay for that?)

So about $140k for food & hotel + unknown amount for bus/transport costs after being there, etc. Assuming the bowl pays for NOTHING, I'd find it hard to believe this would get over $200k overall. So let's call it $213,542 -> Food, Hotel, and transport.

That leaves $700k in expenses for flight & other junk. Let's say the other misc stuff cost, say, $25k. A big buffet dinner for players (despite stipend covering folks anyway), a room rented here and there, hidden cameras in the cheerleaders bathrooms, movie rentals, what-have-you.

$675k for flight of 509 people = $1,326 for flight per person (and understandably way extra luggage) on average. That may not be so crazy, I dunno.

But $1,794.78 per person overall? 509? Really? IMO: 120 players + 100 band members + 30 cheer + 50 others should be enough -> 300 overall.

That would have cost $538,434. After the $475k payout --> -$63,434. That would sound more reasonable. :)

I understand the argument on the other side strictly from a dollars and cents perspective, but IMO the national exposure for the football program and university is priceless.

You take the whole band or you take none of it.

RE: Expensive proposition this bowling thing - WheresWaldo42 - 05-07-2015 09:41 AM

Just ask the BIG boosters to cover the tab. They didn't have any trouble coughing up an unnecessary $400k+ yearly to give PJ a raise. What's another $400k to send the team and band to Idaho? Heck, negotiate a few extra adds on the radio broadcast and you'll make that money right back in no time.

Chump change. If the exposure from that bowl game convinces just 10 more students to attend WMU, we pay it off in 4 years. Look at things in perspective.

I dunno, I think if financials were an issue, you can take a slimmed down version of the band. The "fairest" way would be to put the seniors at the front of the line to go.

I'm fine with it. Costs a little more to do it right, but we are going for elite. Don't pinch pennies, go for the gold, better things coming down the line. Glad they did it.

I'll admit to not fully or clearly understanding this. According to the article, the MAC provided us with $475K. Was this $475K our payout for participating in the Potato Bowl?

I find this confusing in relation to the MAC's decision to give CMU $450K for the Bahamas Bowl. Was it ever confirmed anywhere that this $450K was CMU's payout for participating in the Bahamas Bowl? If not - or (more likely) if the payout was significantly less than $450K - where did the money the MAC gave to CMU to help reduce its travel expenses come from?

Absolutely. Most people don't have the math skills to balance their checkbooks, let alone do the business case here. That exposure was worth $ 400,000.00 and then some. If our marketing people can't turn that bowl contest into a draw to attract a handful of more students, we have bigger problems than the outlay. I mean, figure it out-an additional 10 students paying $ 10k for 4 years and we pay it off. BFD!

I simply asked a question. I haven't made a determination one way or the other, despite your insightful contribution.

So for you, exposure the is justifiable means?

So you and Buttons or should I type BUTTON'S feel exposure justifies this expense.

How do you measure the ROI on the exposure? And if it can be done (I don't buy into the simplicity BP states that you add X additional students at a $ level and whalla!) how much $ did WMU make or will make off this "investment"? Or will that forever be an quantifiable unknown?

Spud Bowl "exposure" should pay off in next three years, by end of Fleck's original contract.

More so than International, Texas, and Pizza Bowls apparently did.

Sorry to not get this but I'm not clear on what exactly the payoff is or how much or in what manner it appears.

I believe I understand how the P5 make it work with big TV money but not clear if that is the case here. What am I missing?

The same way playing games on Tuesday nights in November in front of hundreds pays off.

Still not seeing it. Show me the money!
