The Big South just through down the gauntlet.

Game changer and if you don't think so you are fooling yourself.

RE: Liberty to provide cost of attendance. - GaSoEagle - 04-13-2015 09:08 PM

I will be surprised if more than a handful of FCS programs do this and it may be 1-- Liberty.

Because like it or not they are going FBS sooner rather than later. Whether it is the SBC, who knows, but they are setting themselves up for the move.

It's a move for Liberty to make a play for a G5 league. They can go to the league and already show they are able to cover COA, something that many FCS schools will struggle to do.

It could be a significant move depending what the rest of FCS does.

RE: Liberty to provide cost of attendance. - GaSoEagle - 04-13-2015 09:24 PM

Liberty has done about everything it can short of paying off Sun Belt schools to get in.

I have mixed feelings regarding them. On one hand they would be the only private school in a public school conference. Their money would give them something of an advantage. However in the FCS football world inspite of all their money they have failed to make many waves at that level. However they would give App. a travel partner and get us to the 12 teams and we could divide into 2 divisions for olympic sports.

Got the discussion going, didn't it?

It's not a fun week if there isn't a Liberty thread.

I can think of a lot of ways to pass a fun week without it and you don't want to know my reasons for not being keen on the idea of them as an add. I keep that from here. Don't need the arguments.

Just another item showing liberty means business. It'll get much more than message board attention.

At the end of the day, I think the best thing for Liberty is to petition the NCAA to move up in football as independent and have their non-football try to join the A-10. They have the resources and ability to be FBS and a special enough case to be granted a one-time waiver. The A-10 is mostly private, religious schools anyway.

One thing Liberty may accidentally do here is tick off most of the Big South. I doubt many in that league can pay COA, giving the flames a SIGNIFICANT recruiting advantage over their peers.

They aren't getting a Belt bid given the current make up of the conference. Its more likely they get themselves booted from the Big South by other teams that don't want to play with a team paying FCA.

I sense Tom getting more nervous by the day. We love you, Tom!

Honestly, I'm down with adding Liberty and JMU, so we can drop Idaho and split into divisions and get it over with. I personally don't care about what Liberty does or their politics. All I see is a rich school with a team that is ready to go FBS in the footprint of our conference. Same goes for JMU. They both have beautiful campuses, comparatively large stadiums, decent budgets, and pull at least a little media attention. Better adds than EKU or MSU in my opinion. If we still want to get to 12, they're our best choice. However, I'm also fine with just not adding anybody.

My God, Liberty to the Atlantic 10....I don't even know where to start.

Half of the A-10 is non-religious (or affiliated with denominations that affirm same sex marriage). One school might even have a non-Christian majority in its US sourced student body. Two are the flagship institutions of the most liberal states in the US. All of them would vote no. Emphatically.

The other half are Catholic schools. One of them has a history of publicly telling their Archbishop to butt out of their athletic department's decision making process. Most of them aren't going to upset half or more of their alumni bases to take Liberty. Two of them are state schools located very close to LU (both of them would be no votes). A third came very close to getting ejected from the conference this decade (it wasn't Fordham or Duquesne by the way).

I'm at a loss to figure out who would even dare to propose adding them....

All of the schools would probably take a very dim view of LU's online based business model.

Every A-10 team will be paying FCOA.
