Will it definitely impact the playing field? Seems like a situation where they could be working on the field house without impacting the field of play.

Correct. The endzone seats and the scoreboard are being removed to put in the endzone building. The field will not be impacted in this phase. The plan is to be open by the 2016 season.

That wall at the back of the endzone on the cam is the same one in this rendering of the new building: http://www.riceowls.com/view.gal?id=171772

Rice fans:What is the ultimate goal for Rice football in terms of competition and conference affiliation?

I'll answer although I notice you are from a school no longer in C-USA (ECU).

Our current AD, Joe Karlgaard, has mentioned his goal for all sports teams at Rice is National Top 25 Rankings and conference championships.

As Rice has a history unlike any other C-USA school, going back over 100 years and having been a member of a "Major Conference" for most of its sports history (SWC 1915-1996).

[Image: 150px-Association_of_American_Universities_seal.png]
Since 1985, Rice has also been a member of the AAU. The Association of American Universities (AAU) is an international organization of leading research universities devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. It consists of 60 universities in the United States (both public and private) and two universities in Canada.

Rice's ultimate goal is to eventually find its way back to a similar athletics association from where most of its history lies, which would amount to returning to one of the current "P5" conferences.

06-footballRice has won the following Conference Championships in Football:
Southwest Conference: 1934, 1937, 1946*, 1949, 1953*, 1957, 1994*
C-USA: 2013
*co-champions

06-basketballRice has won the following Conference Championships in Men's Basketball:
Southwest Conference: 1918, 1935, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1949, 1954, 1970

06-baseballRice has won the following Conference Championships in Baseball:
SWC: 1996** Rice defeated Texas to win the final SWC Baseball Tournament
WAC: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005
C-USA: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014
**In 2009 Rice came in second in regular season standings (to ECU) but still won the C-USA Conference Tournament that year.

Obviously a tricky question to answer on this board ... but we've clearly had a wake up call over the last 36 months or so in terms of facilities, new AD/athletic administration, coaching hires, etc...

Our new AD is from Stanford, as is a portion of the staff he has brought in.

What's so historic about the construction cam?

We've hooked it up using our original internet connection from 1973.

I was trying to think of a funny and clever answer but can't. HRS (Historic Rice Stadium) is what we call Rice Stadium. Rice Stadium dates back to 1950 so it's historic (which is a nicer word to use than old and worn down).

Rice is a gem. I have known several people who have attended and they loved it.Rice, imo, has real potential to be a very attractive place for football and basketball players. It has some very unique attributes that really can make it an outstanding program going forward.

Actually, it does have a couple of claims to fame beyond age. It was the site of JFK's 1962 "We choose to go to the moon" speech, and it was the site of the 1974 Super Bowl.

I think any G5 school would take a P5 offer if it came up. I think that goes without saying.

However, I don't know that that is actually our AD's goal in and of itself. P5 membership comes with increased costs, I think you have to have more sports, etc.

To paraphrase a frequent poster from the Rice board, our goal should be to stay Rice in baseball, become Gonzaga in basketball, and Boise in football. If that happens, do we actually need to be in a P5?

(Not against going to a P5, just pointing out successful programs in the three major sports outside the P5, and not willing to say "all is lost if we are not in a P5" because, frankly, it's a longshot even if we do everything right...)
