Calkins Was Pretty Easy On Josh This Morning - btiger - 02-27-2015 09:52 AM

but he hinted at the problem: Josh is doing a horrible job of managing the program.

we have no guards. that is josh's fault. managing a roster is the head coach's job.

his forte was supposed to be recruiting but he has filled his roster with mid-major/division ii talent.

Its beyond comprehension that we have the collection of guards we do on this roster with the high school guards that the city produces year in and year out.

Cam Payne is one. Would have been nice to have him as a So. this year.

I've heard this before on 560, when they went over every addition this year and who was recruiting them when they committed to Memphis. And then Wolken tweeted the same thing last night.

But this is all about the point. Markel Crawford can flat out play, and Woodson is one of the best outside shooters we've had in a while. Johnson can obviously score, but he's playing out of position.

Take Nichols, Goodwin/Godfrey, King/Burrell, Crawford/Woodson, and add Chris Garner, and this team should be a lock for the NCAA tournament.

Please stop with the Woodson talk. He is an ok, somewhat streaky shooter with limited athleticism who can't do anything else....he should not be playing major minutes, much less starting, on a high level D1 basketball team.

I like Woodson & I definitely think he has a spot on this team. But you're right...it shouldn't be a starting spot - in a normal situation. It's unfair to ask him to be something he's not (a starting 2 at a major D1 program)

Agree. Woodson plays hard, but he is a situational player, spot up shooter at best. The entire guard situation has to be addressed somehow, someway for 2015-2016. The Lawson's don't play the 1 or the 2 and not sure about the Broddie, he better be a diamond in the rough.

The players' frustration and unhappiness with Pastner is so apparent. Offseason will be....interesting.

Sounds like you're not a fan of his. You don't need to start him, but he's shooting 40% from three, and he's an 80% free throw shooter. And he leads the team in steals.

Is he at (Murray State)? so what does that tells you?

That was the 1st one I thought of.

Anthlon Bell has made 50 3's this season and makes 35% from 3. Would rank 2nd in both categories on Memphis. He avg's about 8 ppp. Be nice to have a guy like that.

Newby avg 5 reb/gm. Does a lot of dirty work. We could use a guy like that too.

I'd take those 3 over Kedren, Pookie, and Cunningham.

Jacksonville offered Cam Payne, remember that.

It tells me Pastner missed on this guy. He's avg. 5.7 asst. and 19.8 pts this season. AS a Soph. 5.4 and 16.8 last yr as a FR.

That kid can flat out play and IS Memphis good.

WTF is D'marnier Cunningham? What does that tell you?

He needs to be on the floor and Burrell needs to get more time, but the PG problem screws up everything

Yeah, but Bell ain't no PG. We need a PG.

RE: Calkins Was Pretty Easy On Josh This Morning - memphissince86 - 02-27-2015 10:27 AM

I'm very interested in seeing how Pastner will mesh the players next year. I have no reason to believe he will do well but still interested.

You have Dedric who essentially plays Austin's position but probably a little more perimeter than post game.

So, you have a log jam with Shaq/Austin as starters. Do you bring Dedric, a highly rated/great talent recruit off the bench?...Maybe.

Then to me KJ and King are essentially fighting for the same position as well. KJ can handle better and play the 3 but King is more so a 4 who needs to develop into a 3.

Not to mention Burrell playing the "3" as well.

So the problem will still be the 1 mostly. Markel can stick at 2. Is Brodie another McGee?
Will Pookie even stay while watching is minutes go to Cunningham?!!!
Will Kedren get in shape?
Will Pastner keep giving Cunningham minutes?

Unfortunately, Pastner doesn't seem to know how to mesh talent. If he had a system, it would be easier. But he just tries to grab talent and doesn't know where to put them.
