Any time UNCW is competing with Florida and Witchita State, if we get the recruit it's an "upset" win regardless of how good a recruiter we have as our coach. We haven't gotten any players with this kind of competition before or after Keatts in a long time. If Siddle can pull it off, he deserves a lot of credit. But i'm not "expecting" it to happen.

I guess but coming in second in recruiting is not what you want.

If you don't take the leap, you'll never land on your feet.

Agree completely. If you take say a Dz swings on bigger guys and land 1, awesome! I'd also argue being in the mix for the bigger names helps you recruit the next level as well.
I agree with that and if you show a kid some love early on in the process before the bigs move in it can be a difference maker. Not many mid majors can come in late on a top recruit and get a sniff from these guys. You don't hit if you don't swing should always be the approach even if you are late.

Best case scenario he can talk one or more of these recruits into the immediate and lasting impact they could have at UNCW vs getting lost in the shuffle of All American talent loaded up at the big schools. Certainly shows his confidence. I like it.

McGrath made some offers of high competition recruits, but I never had confidence he could land them and he didn't.

In my opinion, a degree of fairness should be applied to McGrath in terms of recruiting. There were certainly some glaring holes and "WTFs" in his strategy, obviously the most egregious was a lack of bigs. However, there were/are some quite talented players brought in by his staff.

For sure. That's about the only thing i've given him "mild" credit for

RE: Recruit Updates - jumpinmullet - 03-16-2020 01:29 PM

Its not that easy to get bigs for a mid mojor program who actually wants to score inside like a UNC type offense. With a fun-n-gun like Siddle will want to put in , they don't look for skilled inside guys beside the guards are bombs away at all times. Looking for dunkers and bounders to pass the ball to the wing. Need some shooters and playmakers on the outside and roll it out there.

McGrath could evaluate talent on the recruiting trail, I'll give him that. He found talented guys that were getting overlooked. Idk how he wasn't able to land a big but that hurt tremendously this season. However, I never understood why we weren't involved with JaJuan Carr's recruitment early. Right down the road and he was projecting a P5 or High MM player, get on him early and see if you can win him over. Siddle has come in and made a statement that UNCW is going to go after the top players in the state. People are already talking about UNCW recruiting, just search twitter. That wasn't happening when McGrath was here. If Siddle can land a couple of these guys, there is going to be a real buzz about us.

Not my point. We made offers to players who had a lot of offers from high mids and power 5's and didn't get any of them. Didn't say we didn't get a few good ones.

The buzz will happen when you win games.

RE: Recruit Updates - Seahawk4Him - 03-17-2020 01:13 PM

We're definitely going after Evan Cole.

I think that was pretty much a given. Can we land him is the only question.

Should not to have to compete with Presbyterian for recruits.

Looks like we both made offer on March 15th., so not much we can do about who else offers,

Samage is the least decorated of the 4 guys Siddle has offered but if you read up on him a lot of people think he’s one of the most underrated players in the state. Plays on an absolutely stacked Farmville Central team that he was the 3rd best player on.

He put up some pretty good numbers. Probaby a Phillips like player who didn't get all the hype but will be really good at the mid major level. Even if he is the least hyped, I can promise you Dodd and Phillips know who he is and will be thrilled to get him on board. Should help Siddle in keeping guys from transfering out and give him some cred wth the current players to get an early commit. Wouldn't surprise me at all if getting the offer from Siddle prompted him to move quickly, knowing that other offers are out there, instead of waiting to see what else may come his way.

Siddle recruited his teammate Terquavion Smith, who is a junior and committed to State.

I have seen Smith and was not impressed but it was travel ball. I have not seen Samage.

The literal defintion of a "project". Reclassified from 2019 to 2020 because he just started playing basketball in 2017. Have to trust Siddle on this one because there is nothing out there showing he is worth the gamble.

We need bodies down low. Simple as that. Quality bigs are tough to come by, as usual.

We've gone down the 7 foot "bodies down low" route and it hasn't worked out.

Matt Wilson, Trey Kalina. "Quality" is the key. Like I said, I have to assume Siddle has seen him on the court and sees something others haven't because there is zero buzz about this player anywhere, and at 7 ft., you'd think there would be something. Looks super soft from the little i've seen, and that's not something you can coach away.
