I would sign the best grad transfer big I could get, rather than leave a scholarship open. As it is, if anyone with any size on our squad gets hurt we will be behind the 8 ball pretty quickly.

At this stage of the game, wouldn't be bad even if just for a big body. 82, while you may see that, it did not translate at a similar level to us in Furman.

RE: Recruit Updates - FUATT - 07-19-2019 02:10 PM

Some perspective on Jalen Williams from a Furman fan's POV -

It was announced a month or two ago that he was transferring to Cleveland State. However, Cleveland State fired their coach and his staff a couple of days ago. Obviously, that could change things.

Williams was transferring solely to get more playing time his last year of eligibility. He was a good teammate and didn't have any issues with the coaches that I know of. He has some distinct strengths and weaknesses. His rebounds per minute and blocked shots per minute rates were near the top 1% in the country. His scoring was limited to layups and dunks, however, and he has been foul prone and was turnover prone his first couple of years. Williams' playing time decreased mainly because 6'7" freshman Jalen Slawson took his place in the rotation. Slawson is also very good as a rebounder and shot blocker but is a better overall athlete and has more potential as a shooter. The current Furman staff really wants to put five players on the court who can shoot the three.

A lot of good mids on there including many of our in conference foes.

The staff has been recruiting him since last summer, I remember reading about him. Another quality target.

He seems to be leaning towards High Point and Tubby Smith.

A highlight video from Dean Reiber at a recent AAU showcase. Looks like some lower level P5s are starting to get involved in his recruitment. The kid is very talented offensively, and looks like he can block some shots too.

Recruit Updates - Proff - 07-24-2019 01:33 PM

So our 2020 offers are as follows:

Javon Bensn, 6'8"
Dean Reiber, 6'9"
Melvin Edward's, 6'6"
Raekwon Horton, 6'6"
Giancarlo Rosado, 6'8"
Jaden Coleman, 6'4"
Jemaine Mann, 6'6"

Have I left anyone out? How many scholarships do we have to give for 2020?

I believe 6'5" Jamahri Harvey is still a 2020 target that they have offered. He was originally a 2019 target but reclassified. I heard him mentioning UNCW as a school of interest in a recent interview.

http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/jamahri-harvey

As of right now UNCW has 2 open scholarships for the 2020 class, however it's common practice to offer more than ships than open spots. I believe the staff's goal is to sign one of the bigs they have offered and one of the wings.

Looks like we can take Rosado off the list. He trimmed his schools down yesterday and UNCW didn't make the cut. Disappointing as he was my favorite big they have offered so far. Reiber would be 2nd. Edwards would be my top preference out of the wings they have offered.

Sure. I guess. You make it sound like our recruiting efficiency has been poor. It hasn’t. For the most part, the McGrath era recruits are good and provide value to look forward to. You make it sound like they just throw offers out there to anyone and hope something sticks.

For better or worse, so far recruiting has not been our issue. Winning and player retaining are a separate issue.

RE: Recruit Updates - billthebighawksfan - 07-26-2019 10:47 PM

That's a really good point CG. The deal is that players will go where they feel comfortable and see that it's a good fit. It's not necessarily a knock that a school that you feel is equal or beneath UNCW goes the other way. There's a lot more behind the scenes action that goes on that most don't know about.

They definitely are 1 player at least short at the 5 position so they need to get another one without question. I say this because Dodd can play either position without question,if the situation demands it (UNC game) otherwise they can play small. Dodd will be a force to deal with and you can go ultra big with another big out there. He has serious tools even at an early age and will need to tone it back when double teamed to be aware of guys open on a kick out. He's the real deal.

Getting 1 more big before the deadline would seem to be crucial if John Bowden can't play this year (all eggs in a basket). That's the big question right now. If Bowden is good to go, the Hawks can live with it. You have to have 1 more big to roll and he would be that guy but I'd like 1 more guy just in case. It's very late in the game so I'm hoping that he gets to play. An injury would be terrible to this team given that they seem to have acquired a tremendous amount of talent at the guard, wings and PF. We shall see what unfolds...

RE: Recruit Updates - geezerhawkdad - 07-26-2019 11:38 PM

Someone mentioned Dusan Kovacevic, a grad transfer from Davidson, earlier. He's 6'10". He was hurt his senior year in high school and re-injured the same knee at Davidson. He played 32 games there last season averaging 8.8 minutes a game.

He chose to graduate from Davidson and play elsewhere because Davidson started a freshman center last year and recruited another one this year. His minutes there would be limited.

He'd be useful in practice. If he gets hurt again or cannot carry his weight in games, he'd only be using a scholarship that would otherwise lie fallow.

He's been to the UNCW campus and saw a game there when 4000+ fans showed up.

Can’t say that I agree with this entirely. They did a poor job at feeling one hole that was opened due to an unexpected Grad Transfer in Cylla. If Bowden gets cleared they should be praised for being creative in feeling that need on the roster. This staff can be criticized for a lot of things, but recruiting isn’t one of them.
