It's a GREAT day to be a Seahawk! That's all I'm going to say.

Recruit Updates - Proff - 06-08-2019 08:27 PM

6'3" combo guard Mike Okauru?

What is happening?

Recruit Updates - Proff - 06-08-2019 09:38 PM

Mike Okauru has tweeted he is coming to UNCW.

I assume he’s sitting out this year?

Guys are still putting their names into the transfer portal . I have no special insights.

But a "for instance", 6'9" Moustapha Diagne - a 4 star recruit with immediate eligibility - announced last week that he's leaving Western Kentucky and hasn't apparently selected another school.

RE: Recruit Updates - Gary Miller - 06-09-2019 11:35 AM

Okauru looks to be a really good pickup. His game should translate nicely in the CAA. The staff has done a great job at getting guys from NC in this class. 6 out of the 11 scholarship players will now be from the "Hoop State." 4 in this class alone will be playing close to home. In comparison last season's team had 4 in-state players on scholarship, one of them being Elmore who transferred mid-season. No reason to go all over the place to find talent when it's right in your backyard. This staff continues to impress on the recruiting trail.

Diagne is a really interesting name. He was set to start for Western Kentucky until Charles Bassey came back to school after testing the NBA Draft waters. Slick Rick Stansbury has been getting some studs there, I wonder how much he's paying them lol.

RE: Recruit Updates - Seahawk2010 - 06-09-2019 12:04 PM

Looks like a fantastic pick up. 3 star guy out of HS (when was the last time we had one?). Reading between the tea leaves it appears he didn’t want to be a back up guard at Florida. UNCW could be the perfect place for him to be a starter and really shine.

RE: Recruit Updates - billthebighawksfan - 06-09-2019 01:23 PM

UNCW has had many 3 star guys but not many 4 star guys. He was a 4 star ESPN.

Played at Brewster Academy in the NEPSAC. I wonder if him and Kai ever played against one another.

I know of a school where he can start next year03-thumbsup....

Focus on in state is financial. We are charged out of state tuition for out of state players. Wasn't that way for a long time.

A decent big man that can play immediately is what is needed. A guy that has to sit out a year doesn't help this year. Keyword here is "decent".

If it's a grad transfer with a single year of eligibility, and there's a scholarship available, I think you get the best available big man you can get.

Gary, do you have any insight on 6'10" Kerry Blackshear, Jr. who is transferring out of Virginia Tech? He's immediately eligible and was a 3/4* recruit out of high school...doesn't appeared to have chosen a new school as of yet.

He's visited Kentucky already that I know of for sure. He's most definitely going to a high major school, if not a blue blood.

RE: Recruit Updates - Gary Miller - 06-10-2019 09:36 AM

Two Grad Transfers to keep an eye on.

Tyler Scanlon, 6'7 215 (Grad Transfer, Boston U)

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4067099/tyler-scanlon

Will receive High Major interest, but UNCW could have an outside shot at landing him.

Moustapha Diangne 6'9 230 (Grad Transfer, Western Kentucky)

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4279120/moustapha-diagne

Will likely end up at another Mid-Major. Would definitely see a lot of minutes for us next season if we landed him.
