Does it though?

Why do you think the Keatts recruits are transferring? While our defense as a whole sucked, their D was the worst on the team. Missed assignments, poor shots, and in one's case, breaking team rules hurt us big time. Now, I'm still not sure if this staff can instill the proper defensive scheme. But they were actually trying last year. I saw Manuel pulling players off to the side and telling them what they are not/should be doing. Some really struggled on D. I'm hoping this off season an emphasis was put on D. And along with what we are bringing in, hopefully we will see a vast change.
I blame some on CB for not realizing when he got here defense was going to be a problem. I blame a lot on AAU ball for just showboating players on offense and throwing defense out the window. I remember when Buzz brought brought the two freshmen guards in from Georgia. One, Adam Smith, was a McDonald's All-american. Neither could play a lick of defense. And Buzz caught hell for that. All we can hope for now is CB righting this ship with more emphasis on defense. If not, it's probably going to be another long season. Unless he takes the Keatts approach and try to make up for defensive lapses with a more potent offense. But, really don't see that. It's not CB's style.

While i get it, our D has never been as bad as it was last year. I agree with you in regards to AAU, but we are picking from the same pool as other schools that get kids that can play D.

That's why I blame CB for not noticing how bad of a defense our guys played. It was terrible with Keatts. He just depended on offense to make up for it. Mostly what the press did was help take time off the clock. The closer the ball got to the basket, the worse defense we played.
He offset bad halfcourt D by creating turnovers

Yep, and was deeply exposed come NCAA tournament time for that bad defense AND for not adjusting.

But hey, we currently have another thread discussing UNCW defense... back to recruiting yeah?

RE: Recruit Updates - 82hawk - 05-21-2019 02:59 PM

LOL at the turn this thread has taken in Keatts bashing again. 3 CAA titles and 2 NCAA appearances, having taken Duke then UVA to the wire back to back. Y'all killin' me. I hope we suck that bad the next two seasons.....

Haha. So true. However, I don't disagree with their assessment of his teams' half court defense. His teams had an identity and he had a formula for success.

But back to recruiting. When do we transition to 2020 targets? Do we miss out on 2020 guys because we are having to expend our energy filling spots so late in the 2019 class. I could see this having a carry over effect.

I am not, nor have I ever been, a Keatts basher. His offensive style worked in making up for his teams' lack of defense. That is not CB's coaching style. Which meant Keatts' players were not a good fit for CB's system. I'm now hoping, with CB's recruits, we will see things turn around next season.

It's my understanding we are recruiting for 2020. And I thought we have made at least one offer. Can't remember if we have a commit or not.

Then why mention Keatts at all? Lest we forget, two of the outgoing transfers were CB recruits

Looks like we have offered Jamahri Harvey for 2020. 6'5" SG from Fayetteville NC.

I was responding to the post stating how bad our D was last year. Our defensive problems didn't start last year. It was just exposed more. Just the facts. Two different coaching styles. And I'm hoping that the style we have now will prove to be just as successful as the previous one.

I don’t understand why it took this long, but UNCW basketball finally announced Tolefree’s commitment on social media and the official uncw sports site.

According to Jeff Goodman on Twitter, Jaume Sorolla will visit Cincinnati this weekend and then Nevada. It appears we are out of the running for him. He would have been a great pick up. Every write up on him mentioned his great D.

Then it wasn't meant to be. I'm sure we have other targets. Trust the process.

Offer was made before Phillips committed. Harvey is not in it anymore.

I def prefer Phillips at this point. Really looks like a solid get.

Harvey was an interesting target. I believe he is technically class of 2020 but since he previously reclassified he could've been eligible to graduate in 2019, furthermore I think UNCW offered him to be apart of this class... He committed to Moravian Prep for his senior year recently, so it looks like he's staying in 2020. I have no clue whether he will be a target for 2020 or not. Also, the staff is definitely working on 2020 too. This staff knows how to hit the ground and recruit, that's one thing we know sure.

Well this sucks, he would've been a big time get for us and really put us in a nice position in the CAA for next season. Oh well, can't fault him for waiting it out as those schools are a step above UNCW. I don't know his game well enough to say this for sure, but I feel he could've made a real impact at UNCW, idk about Cincy and Nevada.

One source (can't remember which) had him offered for 2020. So many of these sources don't do a good job of updating. At least for most mid-majors.
