I'm glad to see the strength & conditioning program has not taken a step back since Murph left.

Also, below is a link to Leslie Nkereuwem's junior year highlights.

Some were more upset with Pat's departure than Keatts'.05-stirthepot

I was definitely concerned, but Flemming appears to have been a great find!

RE: Recruit Updates - billthebighawksfan - 05-04-2018 11:15 PM

This coach can also recruit at a high level, but he looks at it a bit differently, which I personally like. Last year he had to do what he could. Yes, in a perfect world, he would have found an athletic big freshman for this year that could mold into a great player but that didn't happen. The staff elected to go with a bouncy energy guy PF that has a lot of experience and somebody that can contribute right away plus got a true big that can sit out a year. That gives time to go out and get some guys for the next class.

I also agree that he likes length which is very important. The kid from Charlotte sounds terrific (potential All CAA type of guy at some point) and the kid that has been sitting is long and is very athletic PF that is potentially a very good compliment to Cacok. Having a PF that can run rim to rim like he can makes a nice difference and he can hit the 3 some too but not like Matt (I don't think because Matt can really shoot). The recent PG signee has 3 years and can shoot/handle with plus quicks and we have Toews too. And, these kids appear to be good kids too. He's building a program for the future and that's what we've wanted for a long time. If Keatts didn't put us back on the map, I'm not sure that this would have happened so I'll give him that but this coach values rebounding and playing inside out ball with valued uptempo so I'm on board. I'm digging what's going on....Go Hawks!!

RE: Recruit Updates - billthebighawksfan - 05-04-2018 11:31 PM

We also haven't figured in what our 7 footer can do after a year in the program. That kid has some ability with offensive skills so that may be a cool thing to see. I've seen recent Carolina teams and they've had guys really blossom and he might just do some damage. I'd personally love to see him be a fly swatter off the bench (to go with his offensive game) and tell everyone..not in my house! Also, Estime really showed me something late in the year with his overall play and position versatility/overall offensive/defensive awareness. Gary may step his game up too and had some moments-when off the ball, which he will be....needs to be shot ready earlier and spring into his shot off the catch (be shot ready then use legs to spring then shoot for optimal timing)..the release is fine. There's a lot of pieces now and the practices are going to make everyone better. That's something that people don't realize is that when you go up against great players in practice, you get better.

Now, if the D gets there, we will definitely have something and that may be the deciding factor in PT.

Let me just add that Gary's enthusiasm and research has added a lot to this board. We've been needing a guy that really follows it and it's been a good addition to the board. This whole thing makes a BIG difference...more than you would think. And, I'm so glad that I found this board when we lost the CAA board. I contacted everyone to get this going from nothing. I don't care to run it any more, but wanted a good place for this to occur. I'm glad that it's in good hands and we have a place to talk Seahawk sports.

RE: Recruit Updates - getmhawks - 05-05-2018 05:24 AM

No one can ever tell Bill he is not passionate about the Hawks. You’re fired up man! I’ve been around the CAA boards since 2002 and certainly thankful for this space.

Love the 2019 activity right now by the staff. Can’t wait to hear about the new kids on campus this summer. Similar to the panthers additions this year, offseason competition at key positions was a priority. We were missing that last year. Coaching will always stick more when there is a legitimate option to take your minutes in the roster.

RE: Recruit Updates - 82hawk - 05-05-2018 05:36 AM

I'm cautiously optimistic. We have no idea if this staff can recruit at a high level yet. Video of HS play is nice, but it has no real bearing on play in the CAA. These are all D1 recruits, so they are going to have some nice stats and video. But what will that look like against D1 opposition? We'll see.

I do like the overall length we are going after. But, everyone wants length. That's where being a mid major is tough. REALLY good players with length are being recruited by P5 schools. We aren't in that category. So, the players with length we can get have some deficiencies, usually athletically. Or, they are sub par scorers.'

That's where coaching comes in as a mid major coach. Can we take the flawed pieces of a puzzle and create a style of play and a team that is greater than the sum of its' parts? That's what Keatts did, and why he had immediate success. I hope the McGrath squads can do the same.

Washington State basketball has never been considered good, not saying you're, but I get what you're saying to an extent. And, if the kid is from the East Coast, they generally stay east. Programs like Arizona et al are different. BTW...wonder what's going to happen to that program?

RE: Recruit Updates - billthebighawksfan - 05-05-2018 11:36 AM

Here's a link to Sims offer sheet. You'll see Minnesota and URI among others on it so this staff can go out and get players with good offers. Players weigh in proximity to home and PT a whole lot. Estime was a 3 star ESPN. These are good recruits with good size but you never know. VCU went to the Final 4 from the CAA and so did Mason. You can get quality players with the right staff that works hard.

RE: Recruit Updates - 82hawk - 05-05-2018 11:51 AM

Umm. Not sure Cacok would have ever been described as "chubby", even in HS. He definitely took it to the next level in physical attributes though.

RE: Recruit Updates - billthebighawksfan - 05-05-2018 12:05 PM

Who would say/write that about Cacok? That sounds ridiculous...

RE: Recruit Updates - Gary Miller - 05-05-2018 12:37 PM

Chubby was the wrong word to use. He just wasn't the physical specimen that he is now. He definitely toned and sculpted his body. Look at the "and 1" he got against Duke in 2016. He's put significant work into forming himself into what he is today.

Bill I agree 100%. Gary’s recruit research and contributions have been awesome.

I’m cautiously optimistic about all the incoming pieces and recruiting, but also excited. We can really feel right now that CB and his team are putting serious work in and looking to build a sustainable program.

Let’s go Seahawks!

I wonder if he still may be considering UNCW and if we would make room for him if he does.

I highly doubt it. Every indication I've gotten from the program is they have wrapped the current class up. With him using unofficial visits to get on campus with some of these P5 schools, that seems like his move. Personally, I think he would be a good fit at LSU in Will Wade's system. Wish him the best of luck in his decision, as he was definitely an intriguing prospect for us.

Malik Miller, a C from Fairleigh Dickinson, is transferring to Claflin.

Yes!!!

Just as a follow up on a former target, Parker Braun is going to walk on at Missouri. He will likely get a scholarship when one opens up the following year.

Saw that the other day, was quite shocked to hear he chose a Walk-On spot at Mizzou over a scholarship at Illinois. The Mizzou fan base was loving it though, apparently that's a big rivalry up there. Regardless, he's gonna have to develop his body quite a bit to compete at a P5 school. Thought he would've been a good fit here, but bringing in O'Connell instead will benefit us more next year anyway.
