Yeah, a crappy coach ruined several players while he was here. No surpirse. Fornes was never a problem when Keatts was here..

You can't blame a coach for everything and Fornes was not good at all and frankly didn't deserve as much time as he got. Players turn the ball and take bad shots-not the coach in spite of what people think at the end of the day the player has to value the ball above all else. The blame game just gets old after a while and you gotta hold players accountable at some point. Maybe Fornes works out this time .

If my memory serves me right,, Fornes had fixed his on court issues and was playing very well. Something else happened that put him in the dog house.

McGrath had ZERO offensive movement for the team. Everyone was turning it over and taking bad shots. We finally saw some form of high picks and offensive movement the game after he was fired, and we won.

While I completely agree with you the pass back and forth weave outside the three point line was garbage........ there were stretches last year that we did the same crap

Love at the beach is a strong recruiting tool

When I see some improvement over McGrath I will acknowledge it . Right now there is no improvement going into year two in any respect. If we are holding him to the same guidelines as McGrath he has about a year and a half to turn it around.

McGrath was handed a fine functioning machine and wrecked it.

Siddle was handed a clunker and asked to fix it up wen the world was shut down.

There will likely be more time given to Siddle

McGrath didn’t inherit the best situation in my opinion. He wasn’t the man for the job unfortunately so it really doesn’t matter.

That is interesting, Bill. I agreed initially with Solo, but you raise a good point. I know it's repetitive at this point, but completely changing the style and scheme after the success of Keatts is a leadership/vision issue. I don't know if Siddle was ready 4 years ago, but he would've had the opportunity to take over a program with momentum then.

He had an empty class and the best perimeter player went with Keatts. We have all run this into the ground repeatedly and it serves no purpose other than throwing rocks at people who were fired or left for other reasons.
Other programs won games during the pandemic or got better as the year went along-didn't happen at UNCW. The not getting better is the biggest concern to me because they looked like crap at the end of the year. Now he is rebuilding from zero again with all the players who left.
Basketball pays the bills at UNCW and if he doesn't win games fans will not show up. Better win next year is how I see it. He doesn't have to win the CAA-which by the way is as weak as water now but he better be a winner in the CAA and overall. He has a little more security that McGrath because they don't have money to pay two coaches with no money coming in but they need wins and not beating up on D2s at home. No extensions and no pay raise until you win . He may have to come up with his own style to compete and not carbon copy Keatts who by the way would be fired at State if not for the pandemic and the silly contract extension.

Hard to argue with The Mullet here.

LOFL.

Siddle and McGrath both showed up with an empty class of recruits. So all they had was who remained and who they could recruit. McGrath was able to recruit to a back to back NCAA tournament school in a normal year. Siddle had to recruit to a back to back losing CAA team that fired their coach mid season in the middle of Covid, when he couldn't even meet with players or go to see them play.

Advantage McGrath.

Now, look at the players they were left with. It's not even close.

McGrath:

Talley - Sr. PG. - 6'1" 180 lbs. All CAA Rookie, led UNCW to a win against CofC in the CAA finals to get to the NCAA tournament after spending most of the year as a backup guard.

Cacok - Jr. C 6'7" 240 lbs. As a sophomore set the all time NCAA FG% record at 80%. Averaged 12.3 ppg and 9.8 rpg as a sophomore. Named CAA defensive player of the year as a sophomore. Third team All CAA. Made All CAA tournament team as a sophomore

Marcus Bryan - Redhshirt Sr. F/C 6/7" 242 lbs.

Ty Taylor - Redshirt Soph G 6'3" 160 lbs. -Exploded for 29 points in his opening game against Campbell and had several double digit games

Jaylen Fornes - So G, 6'3" 195 lbs - First career start against Delaware responded with 17 points against Delaware as a feshman. Appeared in 30 of 35 games. Shot 45% from three.

Brown Sr. PG 5'10" 160 lbs

Those first five players represent a starting five that could easily be top 3 in the CAA. Very good PG and one of the best players at center in the history of the CAA. Then a 6/7" 240 lb. forward and two more guards.

Now, compare that to the players who were there when Siddle came on board.

Phillips -So PG - Didn't playuntil last two games. All CAA rookie as freshman
Estime - Sr. G - Didn't play at all
Simms - Jr. G 6'6" 195 lbs. - 11.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg 35% from three. Missed last four games due to injury

Okauru - Sr. G, 6'3" 185 lbs - 9.5 ppg, 5.6 rpg.
Gadsden - Jr. G 6'1" 160 lbs - 10.6 ppg, 2 rpg 34% from three.
Boggs - So G/F 6/7" 190 lbs - 5.5 ppg, 2 rpg.
Tolefree - So g 6'3" 195 lbs
Dodd - So C 6'6" 255 lbs. - 3.3 ppg, 2 rpg
Bowen - Sr F/C 6'7" 200 lbs. - 1.9 ppg, .5 rpg

I'll let anyone on this board tell me which roster they'd pick if they had to choose. the one McGrath inherited or the one Siddle inherited.

I'll pick first. I'll take the one with Cacok and Talley on it.

HC: Bill (He's going to lecture us continually on our form, getting shots off quickly, handles, and will probably do it in massive verbal paragraphs)
PG: Gary (reasonable and level-headed)
SG: 82Hawk (he's just going to keep shooting, and shooting, and shooting)
SF: SeahawkNation08 (underrated asset that's always posting in the right spot at the right time)
PF: Sea33Hawk (B/c a boards team without 33 would be garbage)
C: SeahawkHoops (because he won't shutup about needing bigs)

6th man: Me, because someone is going to have to bail you turkeys out when you're down 23 two and half minutes into the game.

RE: Basketball Recruit Updates - Seahawkhoops - 03-30-2021 02:33 PM

82 not sure where you get your stats from but Gadsen didn't "sit out the first ten games" this past year. He played in 16 of UNCW's 17 games.

Well played. But any team with me at Center might be down more than 23 2:30 in! Although, I might could play C for Siddle it seems

McGrath was handed a fine functioning machine and wrecked it.

Siddle was handed a clunker and asked to fix it up wen the world was shut down.

There will likely be more time given to Siddle

G - Didn't play at all
Gadsden - Jr. G 6'1" 160 lbs - 10.6 ppg, 2 rpg 34% from three. Sat out first 10 games of the season due to injury
Simms - Jr. G 6'6" 195 lbs. - 11.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg 35% from three. Missed last four games due to injury

Okauru - Sr. G, 6'3" 185 lbs - 9.5 ppg, 5.6 rpg.

Here's my all time squad:

Athletic Director: Mullet (because nobody will ever do the job as good as he could, and in the end when the team is on the court they aren't listening to him)
HC: Bill (He's going to lecture us continually on our form, getting shots off quickly, handles, and will probably do it in massive verbal paragraphs)

Seems pretty accurate. But i'll follow up with a lengthy post tomorrow about why I should be the coach....

04-cheers

My mistake, that was pulled from the previous year. Doesn't change anything.

You are right. I feel dirty agreeing with you. If last years team was healthy(specifically Shy), it would have been closer. But given it wasn't, it's not close at all.

But remember you like the diminsh the importance of Cacok to those teams....... But i won't even go down that road

Sweet! I'm a good fit at SF. I used to be a SG but I packed on too many pounds for that spot.

And yes, having met Rob, seahawkhoops would be a poor fit at C.

Oh. I forgot to add Solo as the team’s media manager/Gatorade cup filler.

Didn't Mrs. Cottonball and The Mullet have something going at one point?
