Marshall not being in the poll is a joke.

ECU ranked as low as they are, also a joke.

The whole freaking thing is a scam. IMO college FB has been ruined and will start to lose some interested parties. Serves the greedy bastards right in the end.

RE: Sorry Herd Fans - ESE84 - 10-29-2014 08:07 AM

Down here in Big 12 country, newspapers saying the same thing. An entire P5 conference just tuned out. B1G can't be happy, either.

The good news for them is the committee has said conference championships matter. How much? We don't know yet. But is assume it means something.

The logic doesn't make a ton of sense across the board though. Kansas state is all the way down at 9, even though auburn is rewarded handsomely for that win. Old miss is at 4, being rewarded for that bama win, yet bama sits at 6.

It'll all sort itself out, but it looks like the committee went heavy on sos right now.

The ECU and Marshall stuff is simply crap. I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't what we got.

NCAA and championship sponsors will milk the publicity for all they can get. Marshall and the MWC will appear soon so the ECU-UCF game and conference champion games have added meaning.

RE: Sorry Herd Fans - pilot172000 - 10-29-2014 08:36 AM

All the P5 conferences wanted this because of inclusiveness, but the joke is that they weren't included either. I know that a lot of the Wake Forest, Vanderbelts and Iowa States did it for the money but in the end they are gonna be on the outside with us. The Big Ten as a conference may have 3 schools but thats it.

RE: Sorry Herd Fans - HerdAlum83 - 10-29-2014 08:42 AM

Which is why you will see this thing expand to 8 teams in the near future. At best every year one p5 conference is going to be left out of the playoffs.. If somehow things would shake out at the end of the season like last night you'd have 3 of the p5 conferences left out... The p5s aren't going to allow themselves to not be represented in this thing.

If the first year ends like the first week, I think we will hear speculation on the P5 dropping weak sisters who hold the best teams back. Indiana, Texas Tech, and Kansas, you are on notice.

Yea it hard to even watch ESPN now days.....Marshall is a joke to them which is unfair to Marshall and their players....Really sad how power and greed took over football 10 years ago....

This is the absolute epitome of "be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. Suck it B1G!!!

RE: Sorry Herd Fans - banker - 10-29-2014 09:16 AM

I think it's all just a clever plan being executed.

They make it about SOS, but in their opinion SOS is simply defined as P5 strong, G5 weak. They consider a win over Vanderbilt a better win than one against Temple, even if Temple did beat Vandy.

So what's this do? It forces G5 schools to schedule as many P5 schools as they can. This increases supply of G5 schools begging for P5 games, which gives the P5 schools additional scheduling leverage. They parlay that in to more home games, which adds to their competitive and financial advantage.

Why should Marshall, or any other G5, have to take 2 or 3 for 1, or one and done, just to have an opportunity to be considered? It's like we have to pay to play and the P5 gets paid to let us play. To me, the access spot is about putting the best G5 school in the access bowl. If that's the case, it would seem that a school from say the MWC that beats a quality team from the AAC, CUSA and MAC OOC is making its case more than a school that beats some bottom feeder P5 schools.

None of us are ever getting a playoff spot. Maybe we should look at scheduling options that limit P5 games but involve more cross conference G5 matchups. Don't give them their scheduling advantage while also defining a true best G5 team on the field.

It's easy to say "Marshall is 8-0, how are they not ranked in the College Football Playoff rankings!!!???OMG!!!!!!!???!!"

ECU should definitely be ranked higher but it's hard for ANYONE to try and argue Marshall's case when you look at their schedule. And for the record, ***DISCLAIMER***I'm not saying Marshall isn't a good football team, they are a good football team. But do they truly deserve to be ranked in ANY poll when you examine their schedule and who they've played???? Let's take a look.

Marshall wins vs:

-Miami-OH (2-7)...who's lost to an OVC team at HOME and a 3-5 Buffalo team.
-Rhode Island (0-8)....no need to say more.
-Ohio (4-5)....they barely scrapped by a 1-7 Kent State and 1-6 Idaho team.
-Akron (4-4)...decent win? Akron's wins are vs. Howard (1-7), Pitt (4-4) 03-confused , -Eastern Michigan (2-6), and Miami-Oh (2-7)
-ODU (3-5)...their only wins are against Hampton (2-6), Eastern Michigan (2-6), and Rice 4-3) <---another head-scratcher...???
-MTSU (5-3)...first and ONLY "decent" win...every team they beat, they should've beat (0-8 Savannah St, 3-4 WKU, 3-5 ODU, 3-5 USM) w/ the exception of UAB who is 4-4, a decent win for MTSU?? who knows??...and every team they lost to they should've lost to: 6-2 Minnesota, 4-3 Memphis, and 8-0 Marshall
-FIU (3-5)...they lost to Bethune-Cookman at HOME and also lost to 2-6 UTSA. Their 3 wins are against Wagner, 4-4 UAB (that's another head-scratcher game03-confused), and 3-5 FAU
-FAU (3-5)...their only 3 wins are against 1-6 Tulsa, 2-6 UTSA, and 3-4 WKU.......they got blown out by Nebraska, Alabama, FIU (who is 3-5 mind you), and they lost to a 3-5 Wyoming team....but hey, had FAU scheduled Miami-OH, Rhode Island, and another cream-puff....their schedule would be 6-2 instead of 3-5 and we'd be saying "hey, that Marshall win over 6-2 FAU is a pretty respectable win.......NOT!"

So if my math serves me correct the combined record of the teams Marshall has beaten is: 24-42....that's not good at all.

I really like Marshall and having them in our conference is good considering all the teams who've left CUSA in the past. Also, I do realize you're supposed to always look out for your conference brethren, co-sign for them, accentuate the positive and all that good stuff but when you look at their schedule....it's hard to argue against ANY poll that doesn't put them in their top-25. Their best win is against a 5-3 MTSU team who LOST to a middle of the road AAC team in Memphis (who we all know isn't a very strong football program)...but I digress. Marshall is good...but not top-25 good because of their SCHEDULE. If Marshall finishes undefeated, then they should be ranked in the top-25 just for the sole reason for being and undefeated Division-1 FBS team and only that reason. Just my two cents.

Have you taken a close look at ECU's schedule. Yeah, they beat the Hokies and Heels. Two teams that we now know - aren't very good. Two P5 teams yes, but in association only.

Nothing is set in stone until December 7th. We are still in the hunt for the access bowl. A loss and we focus on a possible league title and the HOD Bowl.

God, your anger is delicious. LoL

A sub .500 VT or a .500 UNC team will ALWAYS be considered a better win than ANYONE on Marshall's schedule. In-conference included.

Guess what, bud? Perception matters.

I think you are right but I do believe the committee sees a win over Temple better than Vanderbilt since Temple beat Vandy. One thing I noticed from last night the committee is not basing this off conference or conference games. They are basing this off just games they don't care if it nonconference or conference games as long as you are beating high quality teams and your loses are against good teams. So in the future if a G5 teams wants to have several teams in the Top 25 and a chance at the playoff they are going to need a few good teams. For example if UCF, Marshall, and East Carolina were all still in C-USA this year and played each other it would actually help each team move up.

Take in this scenario:
East Carolina 7-0: with wins over SC, UNC, VT
UCF 7-0: with wins over MIZZOU & Penn State
Marshall 8-0: with wins over Louisville & Purdue

All three of those teams would be ranked in the Top 20 of CFB. If each team went on to play each other the rest of the season they would move up.

For example if Marshall beat UCF. Marshall would then be seen as better then MIZZOU and Penn State. Then if ECU went on to beat both UCF and Marshall they would be seen as being better ranked then MIZZOU, Penn State, Louisville, and Purdue. Plus Ohio State who lose to Virginia Tech and so on and so on. This would lead to ECU having a good chance of being in the Top 6 in the polls.

The key to what we saw is that you must schedule good non-conference opponents and you want your conference mates to win non-conference games so when you play each other it can be seen as a good win or a good lose.

RE: Sorry Herd Fans - HerdAlum83 - 10-29-2014 11:23 AM

The thing is what makes a top 25 team? Is it the quality of the team as being one of the 25 best teams in CFB.. Or is it the schedule?

To me it should be the quality of the team. I believe Marshall has a top 25 quality team regardless of schedule.. I truly believe that no matter what our schedule was this year or what conference we were in.. That for THIS season the Herd are one of the 25 best teams in the country.

Now what the committee has said I believe is not that we aren't a top 25 team.. But because of our schedule they can't be sure of that just yet. That's fine. It's now our job the remainder of the season to go out and prove that. We have to go out and be dominate and convince everyone else they should have the same opinion that I have.

RE: Sorry Herd Fans - Tigermaniac - 10-29-2014 11:40 AM

The college football we all grew up loving is no more. It was messed up before the BCS, Then with the BCS and now with the P5 and the 4 team playoff.

It's complete trash.

What's sad though, is an Iowa State win would probably be considered better in the committee's eyes than say a win over UCF, Marshall or ECU.

***Example***

TCU beats Iowa State moves up a spot.

ECU beats UCF moves down to #24 or stays @ #23.

Biased bastards..

You know, I'm just not going to worry about it. We are one of three teams in the country that still has a shot at a 14-0 season. If we do that, win a conference championship and win a bowl game we'll end up with a top 15 rank and it will go down as one of the best seasons in our history, right with 1996 and 1999.

That's all the team can control. If we do go 14-0 I may print up some National Champion shirts just for kicks. Never could figure out how you get eliminated if you never get beat.

To be the National Champions, you have to win the National Championship. Not just 13 cupcakes and a lousy bowl game.

Marshall fans have jumped the shark.
