Chris Hawkins / Adonis Thomas - UPStiger - 10-24-2014 07:03 AM

So, at 6-6, 230lbs, did we finally get the guy that we thought we were getting with Adonis?

http://www.commercialappeal.com/sports/tigers/mens-basketball/versatile-tigers-forward-chris-hawkins-showing-hes-more-than-just-an-athlete_53100829

"Due to his versatility — Hawkins is a better ballhandler and perimeter shooter than Sneed or Gray — Memphis will likely use him wherever it can create a mismatch. Put him at the 3, and he’ll overpower his defenders with his strength. Put him at the 4, and he’ll blow by them with his quickness."

“If he can defend the post, he can play a lot of 4 for us because he can cause matchup problems,” Memphis assistant coach Aki Collins said. “Really, though, it’s more on the offensive end. Is he going to be able to knock down the perimeter jump shot enough to force the other team to have to go small at that 4 spot? If he’s not stretching the defense — and he can shoot 3s, but if he doesn’t shoot them at a high clip — then they don’t have to go out there and guard him."

If he is a reasonable facsimile of Sneed and Gray, then we are in for a treat.

Not if he doesn't play harder than adonis. Somehow I don't think that will be an issue with Chris.

Just an opinion, but Hawkins probably is more like a mixture of Adonis, with a much better motor, and Sylvester. Throw in a bit of Omar's tenacity as well.
The kid can play.

Well, if Hawkins actually plays in the NBA like Adonis, that will be a start.

I see reasonable expectations are already being established...

Really! Do you folks realize how good Omar Sneed was for the Tigers?

I was about to say this. People forget what an absolute stud Omar was down on the block for an undersized forward. That guy had more fakes, up-and-under moves, and knew how to use his body to shield defenders better than a lot of guys I've seen. He wasn't that athletic, but good luck trying to stay on your feet or not foul the guy. He was awesome.

Omar was one of the best 4s ever here. I thought Omar was CDR at the 4 spot. The guy had a knack for scoring and rebounding. Nothing flashy, just good old hard work.

Adonis was "supposed" to be a lottery pick so probably not. However, I'll trade Adonis for a less talented version that plays super hard anytime. I'm really looking forward to this year.

If he plays as well as Thomas...that will bode very well for our kids.

Who will we go after when this season is over?

Adonis was an average player while he was here...

Yes he scored points but he took many shots to get those points..

Sneed used his booty the same way Wes unseld did. Great at creating space.

Omar is still playing pro ball

RE: Chris Hawkins / Adonis Thomas - Tygrys - 10-24-2014 08:48 AM

I think Adonis got to campus and suffered a bit of an identity crisis. It appeared he attempted to totally change his game and become more of a perimeter oriented player instead of a being a physical 3 and slasher. Unfortunately, he put on/added some weight and that really impacted his quickness and explosiveness around the rim, he also had an ankle injury that played a part in that. All in all, Adonis was not quite the player most of us expected, but I do not fully understand why some like to really pile on him. He was good while he was here, he just was not the superstar many thought he would be. However, he was still good enough to spend time in the NBA...

As far as Hawkins is concerned, we could use a truly physical presence. Although we are pretty loaded in the post, I am not sure any of them are big time physical players. We could use a little toughness on the blocks.

Adonis played as if he barely cared much of the time. I can overlook pretty much anything else but playing without heart.

Omar is one of my all-time favorites and had maybe the best head fake I've ever seen. Had a nose for the ball and just worked his rear off. Hard not to like a kid like that.

Adonis was above average, let's give credit where it's due. The problem with him was he was expected to be (and had the potential to be) a great player, and only performed above-average.
