Nice. Not sure we should even be the MAC favorite, though. Pearson did a lot for us and I'm not excited about our frosh yet. When Brown got another year I had to put WMU as at least 1b in the West. Lots of transfers in the league as well. Still , very nice to be on the radar nationally.

RE: MBB receives vote - T-Town - 10-16-2014 04:40 PM

Last year I thought the Rockets had a real shot at the NCAA Tourney and think they do again this year, but nothing is promised or usually easy. I do think that next year with the loss of the seniors the program will take a (hopefully temporary) step back for the first time since Coach K. arrived, so this is the year to make some noise.

In any event, getting on the national radar screen this early even if it is ever so faintly is a good sign.

Not sure we should be the favorite? Donald Brown will not be even the best Brown in the Mac West this year.

I agree. To me he's so irrelevant that I don't think he even deserves our respect to the extent that we should even know his name.

And besides that, I agree with someone else that said Whittington was a bigger loss to WMU than Brown would have been. (or something to that extent)

yeah, brown can shoot his team into a game for a half. when he gets hot you get burned. he also plays with heart, but he's not a great all around player. i like applewhite as a defensive option on tava who was their most effective player against us last yr.

I've been surprised by the lack of pre-season respect for Western. I think it was pretty clear that they were a better team than we were last year. We made a great comeback in the last few minutes to win the home game, but they owned us pretty well otherwise. Both teams lost a key player. Pearson did a lot of things for us, as Whittington did for them. I think we win the conference only if our defense improves significantly over last year.

I agree. With Brown getting another year at WMU, I think going into the season, they are the favorite. Defense will be a key for the Rockets overall, and it will be interesting to see whether we replace Pearson more effectively than they replace Whittington--I think we will, and that may be the difference maker.

RE: MBB receives vote - utrocks84 - 10-17-2014 02:02 PM

I feel losing their Big will be harder to replace than Rian will be for UT. Dre Applewhite can be a difference maker who is more physical than Rian. Boothe and Garber should be improved and a presence in the low post. And looking for a big improvement fro Jon Williams and more ofense from Lauf. Defense will be better as this team as actually played together for 1 full year in games.

NIU is much better at defense than TOLEDO and they will be able to score with TOLEDO, this year. TOLEDO should be the pre-season favorite but NIU will challenge for a MACC. The Huskies are about to start a three year run at the top of the MAC.

I'm sorry, maybe you can explain this. NIU is much better defensively and can score with UT but UT should be favored? Wouldn't that mean NIU would score against UT but UT would struggle to score against NIU? I agree that NIU's sterling hoops pedigree would indicate a return to their former greatness (greatness=perrenial 3rd/4th place West finisher) but I suspect you'll have a "little" trouble shutting down UT.

RE: MBB receives vote - dekalb222 - 10-23-2014 01:03 AM

TOLEDO should be pre-season favorite's based on last year and returning 4 starters. NIU was a much better defensive team than TOLEDO was last year. TOLEDO was a much better offensive team than NIU was last year. I believe, NIU will still be much better at defense than TOLEDO. I also feel that they will be very close to each other on the offensive end. Thus, I'AM picking NIU too win the MACC. What is going to really happen who knows? but I do feel its going to be a strong year for MAC Basketball.

RE: MBB receives vote - pono - 10-23-2014 03:07 AM

NIU is improving, but they haven't shown they can beat people yet. there's a difference between becoming competitive and winning championships. this yr NIU will have a little more depth and better backcourt balance. we'll see if montgomery can coach much offensively, which has been his weakness so far.
