2015 Recruiting - billthebighawksfan - 08-10-2014 01:50 PM

Here's a link to Verbal Commits. Keatts has over 40 grants offered for the final 3 spots. UNCW's beat writer has also been doing a great job covering recruiting as well.

I am fascinated by the number of offers that Keatts has made for those relatively few spots. I guess that's the trend these days. But I'm not clear on how it actually works - what happens if the first 3 "yeses" don't match up with your position needs? Clearly there's a way to handle that. I'd just like to know what it is.

I think they advise recruits that, for example, they only have room for one 7 footer, and, that the first 7 footer to commit gets the slot, and that offers to other 7 footers are automatically retracted. Everybody knows that schools are going to make far more offers than there are available slots and that different playing positions on a team require different skill sets.

RE: 2015 Recruiting - 70shawk - 08-21-2014 06:08 AM

Thanks, Indian. I assumed something like that....but this business of offering 40 guys for three slots seems to be a relatively new development. So I'm just trying to get the nuances down!

Another shooter prospect for the 2015 class. He's casting a much wider net which is good. Need to solidify the WG/WF position and another PF so he's hunting where the ducks are.

I actually think this year's team is going to be pretty good. That is to say, we will really see a turnaround right away - I'm thinking middle of the pack in the CAA. I would be predicting something higher...IF we had a shooter.

Maybe being in better shape this year will translate into knocking down more shots for the existing players. But our long range shooting percentage from the current players was just awful last year.

Jim Valvano used to say that if you could shoot the ball, then there is a place for you in the game. Can't have too many shooters.

Mark Matthews verballed to UNCW today. He's listed between 6'4" and 6"6" and looks to be skilled offensively. Two more grants yet to give.

As far as this year goes, who knows? I agree that shooting is a major concern, maybe the only one. They should have the athletes to run and press however. And they have good bigs that can board, block shots and score. Shooting the ball is so vital though. It really looks like they will be loaded the following year with shooters/players. The program is definitely on the rise again finally, but it may not happen right away. I do agree that they will definitely be better though.

He sure looks like he's a good shot. I like his height as well. The CAA has always been a strong guard conference, so when someone like Adam Smith comes along - who had quite a shot, but was nowhere near his advertised 6'1" - as soon as the rest of the league figured him out taller athletic guards really shut down a lot of his production.

RE: 2015 Recruiting - billthebighawksfan - 08-25-2014 08:08 PM

I sent most of the guys on the Zone a private message to come over here, at least for the time being, maybe to stay. We should start getting more posters soon.

Yea, this guy could be very good-this coach does know talent when he sees it. You never know, but he definitely can shoot the ball. That is the one skill that the Hawks basically haven't had enough of recently.

RE: 2015 Recruiting - 70shawk - 08-26-2014 09:19 AM

Thanks for sending the PMs to the posters at CAA Zone. I guess they have to log on to see it though!

Any idea what's really going on with the CAA Zone's owners going into the "read-only" mode? If they were really serious about keeping it going, you would think that they would post some sort of update on their 'upgrade'.

I frankly only found this board by doing some google searching. It's a little bit of a chicken and egg situation - no activity here because there is no content, but no content because no one has been coming here. But if the CAA Zone is really down for the count, then folks need to switch for sure.

By the way, I've done a little due diligence on Mark Matthews. He seems to be something of a late bloomer. His other offers seemed to be very real, and it seems quite possible that if we hadn't gotten his commitment now other schools would have been stepping in that would have been difficult to compete with.

I'm quite impressed with Keatt's recruiting, especially because none of it is based on anything the the UNCW program (as opposed to the vision that Keatts is painting). The successes of the late 90s and early 2000s are ANCIENT HISTORY to today's recruits.

Thanks Bill, I'm here let the party begin :) In all seriousness, WTH with the Zone?

My recollection is that the guys running it were from one of the schools that left the conference. If that is correct, then it certainly couldn't be a labor of love for them, and most sites aren't big money makers...so maybe they just skipped out like deadbeats?

There is a lot of institutional memory amongst the crowd that posted there.

Heck, I even miss The Mullet!

Gave up on the Zone. Glad there's a source of info besides the Star News blog. Hope things get turned around soon. I think enough parts are in place to compete.

We were in almost every game until the second half last year when we seemed to melt down. I think conditioning was the reason. Keats looks like he has a handle on that one. If a shooter evolves, we could have a pleasurable season this year.

The thing that concerns me is making a mention of playing right away. Should never make that promise because you just don't know how things will pan out.

I think they said he had a chance to start..and if he is the shooter that he is supposed to be, he just might.

I agree definitely a chance. Just a fine line there because if you make tat promise and it doesn't pan out a kid could leave before he has a chance to develop

Mark Matthews is a 3 star recruit according to Rivals. The PG out of Va, Jordan Talley, that playing this year is a 3 star Scout as well. The three guards sitting out all had very high 3 point percentage #'s last year. Keatts is getting guys that can play.

Hawks get another verbal. Athletic PF that's a perfect fit for the system.
