... what if Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy looks over at what just happened at Memphis and decides to go the same route?

It just so happens Kennedy has an extra spot on his staff. It just so happens that spot has been left open throughout the July evaluation period. Is it crazy to think that Kennedy could go to Gerald Hamilton, Labissiere's guardian, or someone else close to him in exchange for his prized recruit?...

...There's no doubt that Ole Miss would take some grief if this happens. But why would Ole Miss care? Is that not better than being irrelevant? The Rebels don't get five-star players out of high school. They can land the occasional talented-but-embattled transfer (read: Jelan Kendrick), but this is a rare opportunity if they were to make a move on hiring someone close to Labissiere.

As for Memphis fans, they will doubtless -- if this were to happen -- cry foul. But Ole Miss fans will simply be able to look back and say, in some way, they're just following the example set by a school 80 miles up the road.

Ole Miss going the Mario Chalmers route

A guy who has zero basketball experience either as a coach or as a player? Sounds like something the Black Bear basketball program would do. They need a jump start.

Such hard hitting journalism!

Martin - what we really want to know is how the black bears score coke now that Henderson is gone.

I haven't heard the show for a while but if JM did suggest this then he is not informed of the NCAA rule changes that does not permit this.

I believe the rule says if you hire someone with no actual basketball background that is tied to a recruit, there is a minimum period (2-3 yrs I think) before that kid can be on the team.

Help me out with the wording on the rule (I'm paraphrasing) but this cannot happen the way it is suggested in this post.

Fact checking that was the furthest thing from Martins mind.

If he chooses Mississippi basketball package deal over Memphis basketball package deal, that would be a mistake for the kid.

We all understand the allure of playing at Kentucky with Cal, but if he wants to both stay near home and play in legit national basketball town, there is no question what the best decision will be for him.

He is going to play in moody Coliseum instead of an NBA arena? Play with the guys they have instead of the Tiger's 4 and 5 star players? Be coached by Kennedy instead of Pastner and staff?

I believe the rule is that you can hire anyone you want for your three assistant spots. You are not allowed to hire someone as a director of basketball ops or some other made up position ala Tyrekes trainer.

Correct, that concept would fall under journalism and he's only in the business of sensationalism.

but what if he has the rule correct and you guys have it wrong? what then?

I'd enjoy knowing if this is true ... the only thing I've been able to find is “during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete’s anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the student-athlete’s actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position.”

... and this is the "noncoaching" provision so no hires re: "Director of Operations" stuff. I've not ever heard/seen anything around hiring restrictions based on past "basketball background". That seems vague and potentially troublesome when attempting to define clearly.

Absolutely nothing. We all know Skal isn't going to OM. lol

I do not think at the end of the day he goes to mississippi. I do think they could hire his second cousin from Haiti as the 3rd assistant if they wanted to and it would be allowed. Two seperate points.

My main interest is in seeing if any of our resident "fact checkers" will admit they were wrong.......

If I had to guess, you'll post about it five more times and most folks will still ignore you.

as long as I have your attention Im cool.

92.9 is smelling ratings and website hits. They are going to ride the Skal to Ole Miss thing for as long as they can.

To quote Jarnell Stokes, it is a business decision.

Nothing for anyone to admit because no one said it was factual yet. A suggestion was made and clarification/verification was asked for.

No one has been able to do so yet.
