My picks for group winners in bold, being placed with Germany and Portugal, we're going to get killed.

Merica!!!! I just hope we sneak out of Group G.

RE: OT: World Cup Thread - Volkmar - 06-11-2014 07:20 PM

Honestly think the USA has a legitimate shot at making out of our group. We should beat Ghana. I think we can get a draw with Portugal. When we play Germany, I've gotta pull for Germany though because I was born there. So I think we'll get 4 points out of our 3 group games, and whether or not we'll go through will then come down to the other results, perhaps even goal differential.

Hopefully...
1. Germany
2. USA
3. Portugal
4. Ghana

I'll be pulling for us hard, but just don't see it, Germany, loss could be real ugly, Portugal, L, Ghana, win, 1-2 with a possible gawd awful beating from Germany, just don't see us making out of the group stage. And, yes it sucks!!!!, I want the men's team to at least start making past group on a regular basis.

RE: OT: World Cup Thread - FAUAEPi - 06-11-2014 07:30 PM

I originally had France winning their group, but without Ribery, I know have them as runner up to the Swiss.

RE: OT: World Cup Thread - FAUAEPi - 06-11-2014 07:32 PM

I will try to keep up with the scores of the games and the place of each team in their group.

RE: OT: World Cup Thread - ecumbh1999 - 06-11-2014 08:44 PM

We got some talent, but very little World Cup experience and just now settled on a back line. This I just don't see it, down the road, I think we could.

RE: OT: World Cup Thread - Murray007 - 06-11-2014 09:24 PM

I think the US has a decent shot to beat Portugal. That game is going to be the breaker in our group because we ain't beating Germany.

Those European teams play with a finesse that our players just don't have.... Still... LETS GO USA!!

Disagree. I think Klinsmann had an idea of whom he wanted for his back line the whole time. He just wanted to see what some other guys could do back there, not to mention provide them with some valuable playing time.

I also think experience won't play quite as big a factor as you might think. Ghana should be a win. The Portugal game will come down to tactics, specifically with regard to Ronaldo. Hold him at bay, and Portugal's not the monster many think they are. In fact, if he hadn't come back in time from his injury, they'd have had no shot at progressing from the group.

Group A:
Brazil
Mexico

Group B:
Chile
Spain

Group C:
Colombia <-- I considered dropping them out for an upset by Ivory Coast.
Japan

Group D:
England (I could see them losing out here though)
Italy

Group E: (and honestly I don't think France is that great of a team, I just had to pick two out of here.. )
France
Switzerland

Group F:
Argentina
Nigeria

Group G: (US is gonna get trounced by Germany unfortunately, and will have no spark against Portugal)
Germany
Portugal

Group H:
Belgium
South Korea

Agree for the most part, but can we attack them enough over 90 minutes and not have defensive break down to win, IDK. Right now I see a 2-1 loss with Portugal getting a late goal to win. Germany is just 04-jawdrop.

I think it's gonna depend upon Klinsmann's tactical game plan. Portugal really does rely heavily upon Ronaldo (a lot like the Heat and Lebron). I'm not sure we can beat 'em because he's that good, but a draw is entirely possible if we can minimize his effectiveness. Depends on how we play him, and how well our guys carry out that game plan.

RE: OT: World Cup Thread - shiftyeagle - 06-12-2014 08:15 AM

Might as well write-off Germany. We won't beat them.

Ghana has owned the US in the past two World Cups. US needs an outright win against them now and somehow scrape together a win against Portugal. It's a tall task. Ridiculous group. Look at garbage ass Group H compared to this one

Our match against Ghana in the last W.C. was actually a draw since it ended at 1-1 in regulation. That's how it officially goes down in the books. Ghana pulled it off in extra time but not without controversy. They were very fortunate imo and there's no ownage there at all. And btw, this is a very different USA squad from the one that faced Ghana a full 4 years ago.

RE: OT: World Cup Thread - MTowho - 06-12-2014 08:22 AM

This is like Christmas morning. Luckily I have a great boss - we've booked a 2 hour meeting in the conference room, complete with projector, for the opening match between Brazil and Croatia.

I think we beat Ghana 2-1, but it won't be enough to get us through.
