"This just in. So I have only been able to confirm it in blogs and chat rooms but supposedly, Michael Benson, no relation to Karl Benson, president of Eastern Kentucky University, has been in communication with the higher-ups in the Sun Belt. They have stated they are not interested in bringing up an FCS school thus this will not only leave out Liberty but a slew of other schools. There are only a handful of possibilities left in the FBS, meaning one, and that is UMass. UMass may want to be a football-only member but do the members of the SBC still want a 12-12 arrangement like previously planned? The Sun Belt needs only one more school for a conference championship in football but not necessarily for basketball or any other Olympic- sports. Does that mean New Mexico State will join as an all-sports member? Interestingly, you will have outliers in the far west and far east, if this were to happen. Could Army join? It does not have a jonesing for a conference right now although, maybe the purpose of creating the Cure Bowl is a way to create a preferential tie-in for Army. If New Mexico State would join as all-sports, then it would throw the WAC into further turmoil. NJIT to the WAC perhaps?"

So, in other words, echoing the discussion in this same board?

Somewhat, however there are some that are certain a FCS addition is very possible. The quote that I posted says no. But it is a source ,for what it is worth. My opinion is a fbs add. Very slight chance of a fcs add

To be sure some are not convinced by that discussion, but that piece is simply summarizing that side of the discussion that took place here (and conference realignment and similar sites) following that EKU email circulating.

Since its just summarizing "online discussion", and this is one of the places where the "online discussion" it is talking about took place, its just an echo. There's no new information in it.

From Friday:
Quote: Here is a claimed email from EKU.

Dear Campus:

We have learned from the Commissioner of the Sun Belt that we are no longer being considered for expansion at this time. Instead, the member institutions of the Sun Belt seem to be narrowing their attention to those universities currently within the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), and not to those Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) schools considering a move upward.

We will remain in the Ohio Valley Conference, will continue to improve our facilities and expand our programs, and will compete on the national stage of FCS football.

I have appreciated the input received from interested faculty, staff, and students on the topic of EKU and the future of our athletics progracm and remain committed to moving our institution forward, both academically and athletically.

You make good points. I had not seen any other source that said, without reservation, no FCS. However like I said you take it for what it's worth.

This isn't a source. It's someone that read this board and the EKU blog. Nothing to see here...

FCS add chance is less than slight.

I've seen Army mentioned on several posts. They have history and name recognition, but they considerably outside of our existing footprint. Why are people okay with this addition?

I do not get the service academy love. Their football is borderline and it will be surprising if in 10 or 15 years all three dont drop down. They simply cannot recruit at a high enough level in football to continue to be successful. As it is Navy is accomplishing it with scheduling and mirrors.

We only need one for CCG if that is the goal. Take U Mass and end this nightmare

I don't see many people ok with the possibility of adding Army. I just see most folks not even really discussing it because it's unlikely.

If they were invited, it would be fine by me, as they have greater name value than the others mentioned.

RE: Umass related - boroeagle2 - 04-28-2014 09:58 AM

GS fans would take Army for a chance to curb stomp our former coach (actually he left on decent terms I would say with most of our fanbase, but it'd still be fun to whoop him).

RE: Umass related - GoApps70 - 04-28-2014 10:29 AM

Most conferences have drooled over adding Army. Most seem to think it would only happen in conjunction with Navy.
Doesn't necessarily think it will happen.

RE: Umass related - stAtecamera13 - 04-28-2014 10:46 AM

There are a few good reasons to add army.
1. Name recognition. Everybody knows who they are and they still have the army navy game on TV every year.
2. Casual fan of your school that were in the army automatically have 1 game to for sure come too. That boosts attendance even if only slightly.
3. If army comes it boosts the conference image. Army was "touted" to the AAC and the sunbelt get them? That's a boost for image.

4. stAte beat army a while back at home and tore down the goal posts. Still resonate that we are in the same conference.

I have been thinking this for years. Amazing they've lasted this long.

RE: Umass related - GoApps70 - 04-28-2014 10:56 AM

You get little appeal normally from service members. Only the academy people. Servicemen do not even like the
officers normally. So it's appeal isn't what a lot of people would think it is. Does have name recognition. Questionable abilities to recruit well normally.

NO!

It would be good for the conference but It's hard enough not bringing that offense into the Sun Belt with us. I don't think I can handle that while another team does bring it.

But - It would mean an Nationally televised game on CBS sports for all Army home games IF the current contract would allow it. But - it probably wouldn't allow it, so there goes one of their major ads to the conference.

RE: Umass related - GoApps70 - 04-28-2014 11:08 AM

That would be weird for GaSo if Army came in running their old offense and they had to defend
against it. Deja vu.
