Sun Belt Network - CSS being replaced by LFSN? - Miami (Oh) Yeah ! - 04-01-2014 04:38 PM

Im just curious and realize all things Liberty seem to stir the pot here, but thats not the intention.

Are there any rumors of what will be replacing CSS as the regional TV provider for the Sun Belt Network? I realize Cox Sports Louisiana is still on board but they only blanket a small part of the footprint (2 million homes?)

Football season is approaching fast as its already April and TV programming needs time to plan. Is there any chance that LFSN affiliates in the SBC footprint fill the void if Liberty is added? Of their 80 million households, a large portion of them would be located in SBC territory including in Idaho and the states around Idaho.

The production could be done by individual schools and sent to the LFSN for distribution. AggieVision does this already and so does most of the MAC schools.

CSS was only 5 million households and LFSN would greatly increase that in the South and also reach the out-posts of New Mexico, Idaho and the Northwest that CSS didn't reach while being configured in a way that keeps it regional and not violate the ESPN contract.

DirecTV and Dish couldn't be included because they would be considered "national" but Of the 80 million, 53 million were from affiliate stations and that could be customized to just a regional subset of say 20 million in the SBC regional territory. Added to Cox, it would be better than CSS for the Sun Belt Network and could get off the ground in time for the season. Add AggieVision to the mix to help produce content.

Is there another rumored replacement for CSS?

RE: Sun Belt Network - CSS being replaced by LFSN? - arkstfan - 04-01-2014 05:01 PM

My argument is that we ought to (for the moment) forget Cox as well and spend our time talking to Raycom Sports.

The SEC has dumped the SEC TV syndication package that was run by RayCom before ESPN took it over.

There are 26 TV stations across Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina who were SEC affiliates and another 12 across Texas (2 were football only) that no longer have that built-in Saturday morning content.

Take the money from ESPN and front it to Raycom and partner with them to build a network that will show 10 or so games with an 11am (Central) Saturday kickoff and another 10 or so basketball games in the same time slot.

We wouldn't be able to demand a carriage fee but we could share a number of TV slots with RayCom while the rest go to the TV station. Any markets you can't get a broadcast station you go to cable.

If you break even and you are in every school's local market and a few neighboring markets you've got a fantastic deal that the fans will love.

Yeah...Georgia State fans need at least 3 or 4 more hours drinking time than that. GSU football is hard enough to watch completely drunk. Imagine watching it half sober!

Is it half sober or half drunk? And in that scenario which one is the pessimist and the optimist?

12:00 noon EST would not hurt my feelings. One of our local stations will need to find programing for that time slot this fall. I would much rather them show a Sun Belt game instead of an new TV gadget to help you burn off the pounds or make your manhood last longer. That station can not change over to the ACC game at that time due to one of the other stations already caring that conference. I would much rather watch the Sun Belt than the ACC.

RE: Sun Belt Network - CSS being replaced by LFSN? - arkstfan - 04-01-2014 07:16 PM

Panama's objection and subsequent smack talk that followed aside, here is the deal.

The Southland is able to get game on in Little Rock (not sure they are still there since the station got a full-power license) and at one time we had Big East games on in Little Rock. The stations get the content and the only cost (when its not something like the SEC in SEC country) is giving up part of the ad time. It's free content and the station gets the bulk of the ad inventory. They either go out and sell it or plug in cheap ads from a national broker.

I'm sure most people remember those classic SEC TV match-ups like Kentucky-Miss State, Ole Miss-Vandy, GaSt-Bama, UNT-UGA. Even those they didn't have first, second, or third pick of SEC games, by offering the games to out-of-market stations free or close enough they had affiliates in LA; San Diego Phoenix (sub-channel); DC; Hawaii (7:00 am start!); Springfield and Urbana Illinois; Evansville, Fort Wayne, and Indianapolis, Indiana; Wichita; Minneapolis; Las Vegas; Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown, Ohio; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Puerto Rico; Charlottesville and Newport News, Virginia; Spokane, Washington; and Milwaukee. None of those SEC bastions and most with no appreciably significant bases of SEC fans, it was cheap content.

There is simply no reason we can't cover our footprint this way and fans don't need to tune to some obscure network they aren't familiar with, its one of their locals and they can see it with an antenna, cable, or satellite all on the basic tier.

Beyond the obvious problems with LU's advocacy of discrimination and persecution, I think many SBC schools would take a very dim view of having a conference member in control of a significant portion of the programming of conference games.

AggieVision mostly has a presence with Western US Related TV Channels, (Altitude, Fox Sport Arizona, and Root Sports Northwest. All three are available on DirecTV and DISH). We do have a deal with Comcast Sports Net Huston (Available only via Cable), Which covers NM, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas. I think I have mentioned this before, but word is that AggieVision will be in HD starting next year...hopefully.

As far as TV deals go Mr. Peanut...I mean Benson was worthless when it came to making TV deals for the WAC. One of the reasons AggieVision was started, alumni wanted to see NMSU teams on TV.

That's what needs to happen. Back a couple years ago when KAIT (raycom station) was going to broadcast the stAte/Troy game they sold out advertising in 2 hours after they agreed to do it. But then ESPN3 crew that was broadcasting the game screwed it up and nobody could watch the game.

IMG or whoever it is that handles Troy's media had a power issue to the satellite truck.

That game was actually a factor in my thinking. Troy has been able to get games on stations around Alabama and while we've not been nearly as aggressive, when we've tried it we've been able to secure stations in LR as well as KAIT.

Outstanding point about KAIT being owned by Raycom. Pulled up the list of stations they own, here are stations in Sun Belt states

I also think we should atleast hook in to our home games and show the same thing that's on the video board. For the most part the camera crews at stAte and me as a camera op( shameless plug for wolf head films) are pretty good and we run the same setup that espn runs only SD.

The only conflict I see is that to my knowledge Raycom is still connected at the hip to the ACC. And it's their baby or was a couple years when I wrote a SWOTA on them.

Edit: wen't back and found my SWOTA outline and I actually made the exact point your making now about trying to pick up the sunbelt to expand their markets and because of station broadcast proximity to Sunbelt schools. That was when the belt had like 1 game a year on ESPN.

RE: Sun Belt Network - CSS being replaced by LFSN? - SlyFox - 04-02-2014 10:06 AM

For the record, Liberty finally made the switch to a full HD production this past year.

And I agree with the rest of the folks in this thread that a better 2nd Tier television partner is in order. But LFSN would sure make a nice 3rd Tier. If past experience holds true, any games produced by LFSN would be available for free to local affiliates in individual markets. It is commonplace for schools playing us to use our LFSN feed at local affiliates like a station in Myrtle Beach when we play Coastal Carolina or one of the Charleston stations when we play a school like Charleston Southern. This would be a value add for members across the league to be able to watch an HD telecast of road games in Virginia. It also helps ease the travel pains for western members knowing that if they don't want to make the trip to Lynchburg (which combines nicely with side trips to DC or the Blue Ridge Parkway with fall foliage) then they can still watch their team in action in HD.

Raycom used to produce ACC and SEC. It might be an issue in North Carolina and Georgia (and Virginia if we add a Virginia team) but I'd expect in those cases if they are showing ACC on an O&O they'd still try to find an outlet.
