Massey Team Rankings - Vobserver - 03-31-2014 05:02 PM

The Massey Ratings site, which has both its own rating and composites of many other ranking polls/sites, is now doing a "Team Ranking", which is a ranking of programs based on the ratings of all the sports Massey does rankings for [Football MBB, WBB, Baseball, Softball, Mens Soccer, Women's Soccer, Women's Volleyball, Men's Tennis and Women's Tennis].

Just for gits and shiggles, here are the "Team Rankings" for all the Sun Belt Conference Schools, including the 2015 newcomers and the single sport schools:

UL: 72
USA: 104
WKU: 131
GaSt: 138
GaSo: 162
NMSU: 178
TxSt: 196
Troy: 207
Appy: 216
ASU: 223
Idaho: 227
UTA: 254
ULM: 281
ULAR: 305

Interesting but not really useful as most only care about the big 3, football, basketball and baseball

Interesting and useful, since it does give at least one indicator of how Sun Belt schools stack up in athletics across the board -- and not just in the revenue sports. Meaning football.

Thanks for the link. Glad to see we beat Appy. Kind of worried we're ahead of longtime Sun Belt programs like Troy and Ark State -- seems that kind of shows the move to FBS doesn't necessarily mean better athletics as a whole.
Wonder why.

I agree. And most (here) consider football heads and tails above the other two. That's why the bubbas cup is not a big deal around here. Sure winning the bubbas cup is a big deal for bragging rights and maybe some marketing angles, but beyond that the other sports don't combine to a tenth of the Big Three.

Congrats to Louisiana nonetheless.

This appears to be a totally bad ranking service.

Because App is back in the 200s?

It's not like the Massey rankings are some new thing.

This is just a composite of all the sports they do rankings for.

Also keep in mind that App, Georgia Southern, and GaSt sponsor every sport on these rankings. If a school doesn't sponsor a sport they are automatically given a 400 ranking, which negatively effects schools like UALR who don't sponsor 4 of the sports in this ranking.

Who's #1 Stanford as usual.
How about a link. Can't believe App State won the SoCon Commissioners
Cup for almost thirty something years in a row and are ranked so low.

UCLA is currently number one.

Go to the Massey website. Not hard to find from there.

RE: Massey Team Rankings - Crump1 - 04-07-2014 02:14 PM

Considering stAte is second in the Bubas Cup (last time I checked) despite not sponsoring as many sports and a lot of the others, this Massey ranking appears to be total garbage.

I have no idea how we stack up to other Sun Belt teams, but I can't see us being behind Georgia Southern. We've been awarded the SoCon's Commissioners Cup most every year of its existence. It's awarded to the school with the top men's sports program as a whole in the conference. After the Winter Championships (end of Fall semester sports), we were 2nd and GA Sou was 11th. Apparently the points allocation system with this Massey Rankings is totally different.

App was 2nd in women's with Georgia Southern 6th. I'm not knocking you guys, I'd just like to figure that out. I'll need to do some research.

Beats me. I don't put any weight in these rankings anyway. And since we won't be competing for a national championship in football, all I care about is winning. Win the conference in any sport and don't leave it up to rankings 04-rock

Okay. Let's all go over and tell Mr. Massey he's wasting his time. Nothing to see here, clearly. 03-yawn

We win that because we offer more sports than anyone else in the SoCon. Overall, our athletic teams don't perform that well on a national scale. Not surprised to see us ranked so low. Every team ranked had/has a losing record with the exception of volleyball.

Yep, been a down year across the board I'm afraid
