Hopeless Elitists - Hiller4Hyz09 - 09-01-2013 07:38 PM

Holy crap, I just typed a BOOK on this iPad and it disappeared. Long story short, I'm glad there's a few people here like me. GO BRONCOS.

Christmas gift from my wife a couple years ago...so I guess I bought it.

I've heard from way too many Walmart fans this weekend...some of them even went to WMU.

We are an extreme minority.

I take pride in rooting for the underdog, which we will always be in relation to UM and MSU. Someday we'll get them. Hope its at waldo in 2015.

RE: Hopeless Elitists - bostonbronco - 09-01-2013 08:44 PM

I went to Western, so I root for Western no matter what. It they win...great! If they lose...they lose. They're still my team. It is as simple as that.

I want MAC teams to succeed, but my team is WMU.

I ROW THE BOAT, Buck the Broncos, Hold the reigns, whatever it is during the coaching philosophy. It's their team to coach. My team to support.

Coaches have to implement their style, their strategies, their motivations. I'm just going to ... you guessed it ... support the team.

RE: Hopeless Elitists - ColinApocalypse - 09-01-2013 08:55 PM

Most people don't have the fortitude to root for the smaller schools, even if they attended those schools. It's basic psychology that we as humans want our team to win, and that's where bandwagon fans come from. Whichever teams win, people will "root" for them. It's a sad way to validate themselves, especially when they brag about "their team's" success to fans of "lesser" schools.

It's so sad when I see kids walking around campus wearing U-M/MSU/ND gear. It's like...where the f@ck do you think you are? If you're going to sport some colors around campus, at least make it OUR colors. I get it, your brother went to State or your parents went to ND or whatever..blah blah blah...YOU go to Western so have some damn pride! But I guess you can't really blame them. This generation is being inundated from a young age with everything U-M/MSU. It's all they show on TV, you go to any Meijer or Walmart in Michigan and they have U-M and State gear everywhere, it's all they're exposed to and they latch on to it because they don't know any better.

Ugh...long story short: Walmart fans suck.

That was beautiful.

RE: Hopeless Elitists - stdatwmu - 09-02-2013 12:45 AM

I always have to bite my tongue when I walk past someone decked out in scUM or tOSU gear (the two most common ones I see down this-a-way) because all I want to do is ask them, "so what year did you graduate?"

We all know the answer 99.9% of the time will be, "durrrr [inaudible grumbling]" but it still grates on me. And don't even get me started on the people who go to [insert mid-major school here] and continue to root for [insert bandwagon-creating BCS school here]. Agh!

Exactly

You should've seen mine! English language at its best! But yes, Colin probably captured it more succinctly.

I do the same thing, I ask what years they were at UM, usually get stunned silence and an embarrassed shrug.

03-yes

It doesn't bother me if someone roots for their MAC alma mater and roots for a UM. But when that rare occasion rolls around when the two meet on the field, court or ice, pulling for the media darling is just wrong. And they do so for the reasons you describe: ego and self-image.

I love the MAC, and really love WMU. I grew up rooting for UM, but the moment I became a Bronco my passion began for all things WMU, and that will continue till the day I die. I also have a midmajor chip on my shoulder which I admit to having very proudly. We overcome every barrier and obstacle, financial, and otherwise, and still compete quite well.

It is interesting, as now that my kids are in college I root passionately for their schools too. My daughter is at Oakland, and I am taking my son to West Point right now (which, by the way, is one of the most agonizing things I have done in a long time, and let's not even talk about wife). Both of their schools are kind of underdogs in the sports world too, which I like. Please everyone join me, in fact, by praying that Army beats Navy, and breaks the streak the year my son becomes a Cadet.

Does this mean you won't go to a Navy game in Annapolis with me this year?

RE: Hopeless Elitists - brovol - 06-25-2016 05:28 AM

Not at all Charm. Thats not why I won't go to that game, or others, with you. Lol.

Actually, we bought tickets and hotel for Army/Navy game as soon as my son received his appointment. I was shocked at how expensive they were. It's like a freaking Superbowl. But it's far more than a football game. .....and it will be a rare opportunity to see my son.

I'm always praying for Army to beat Navy!

There was a time in this country when the Army/Navy game was bigger than the national championship and many times the winner of the Army/Navy game was in the running for the national championship. To the Cadets and the Midshipmen this is their National Championship and Super Bowl all rolled into one game. Sadly, I think this game is one of the main reasons these institutions can suffer through many losing seasons and still field football teams.

Army Football has yet to recover from when AD Rick Greenspan - himself later fired by Indiana and Rice - fired Bob Sutton on a Philadelphia street corner in 1999.
