Appalachian and GSU baseball seasons end today - GaSoEagle - 05-25-2013 09:33 PM

Appalachian lost to Citadel 8-6 today. App. would have had to beat Citadel twice to advance to SoCon champ game.

We (Ga. Southern) lost twice to Elon today. We led both games and blew 4-1 and 6-2 leads today to lose both games. In the final game with us trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the 9th we loaded the bases with no outs and could not score.03-banghead

Citadel plays Elon tomorrow for SoCon championship. The winner goes to regionals and if a 2nd SoCon team gets in it will be Western Carolina who finished their season at 39-19 but bowed out after a 1-2 record in the SoCon tourney.

Yeah, App State knocked WCU out of the tournament. Was proud of our guys.
Especially proud that we had a seventh straight thirty or more season wins.

Boy 2014 baseball is going to be a lot of fun.

Hope beyond hope we fire our baseball coach. We won't win 20 games next year in the Sun Belt with this yokel.

RE: Appalachian and GSU baseball seasons end today - Saint3333 - 05-26-2013 06:53 AM

This was a down year for App, lost five players to the draft last year. Still won 30 games for the eighth straight year.

Sun Belt baseball shouldn't drop at all with the additions.

And lost a great coach.

IIRC, this is the first non-30 win season for Southern in about 16 years.

I predict you won't win any Sun Belt games next year. You will be playing in the SoCon for the 2014 baseball season.

UTA and Texas State feel your pain. We are both done, thanks to stupid pool play.

Can't speak for TXST, but the draft hit UTA hard last year. The conferences best slugger was drafted by the Rangers in the fifth round, but our best recruit was drafted in the first and signed, so we really lost a lot of offense.

Sadly, it was pitching that did us in this year. Playing against teams that, based on RPI, were weaker this year than last, our ERA was worse by most returners. Guys who had ERA's in the 2's, 3's or 4's in 2012, were at 5, 6 or 7 this year. Only three guys had ERA's below 4. Another 2 were in the 4's. The rest were five or higher.

We have five seniors leaving, 2 field starters, one reliever and two support players. That isn't to say that all the rest will return. The thing I love about NCAA baseball (11.7 scholarships = parity) also means roster instability year-to-year.

It was the lowest seed we received in the SoCon tournament since joining in 1993. Looking back, this team also started the year 19-9 and looked like a lock for an at large regional. Injuries and lack of depth sure did catch up quickly

RE: Appalachian and GSU baseball seasons end today - AppinVA - 05-26-2013 01:13 PM

I like the fight in our team to make it to 30 wins. I'm sure that wasn't the goal at the start of the season, but we had to fight hard to get there this weekend, and did so. Hopefully, the team will have a good recruiting season and we can get back to the regionals next year.

RE: Appalachian and GSU baseball seasons end today - GaSoEagle - 05-26-2013 01:59 PM

This was a down year for the Eagles and our first losing season is probably 15 years. We started out very strong and actually were ranked at #22 with a 19-9 record. Then our pitching starting getting injured and we went into a team slump hitting. From 19-9 to 27-32 to end year. So we were 8-23 over our last 31 games. Still we were 1 game away from playing for a SoCon championship.

We lose our best pitcher who graduates and 3 starters in the field. I have heard we are bringing in several JC pitchers so hopefully we will be better next year.

RE: Appalachian and GSU baseball seasons end today - GoApps70 - 05-26-2013 02:01 PM

They looked like world beaters at first, then a team that couldn't win a pick up game, then came together pretty well toward the
end of the year. They got better and didn't give up.

I will give Coach Hennon credit for getting our team focused heading into the tourney. What killed us as it did over the last 6 weeks is lack of clutch hitting and a pitching staff that could not be counted on.

That is bad news. Transfers and JC's are what kills a good program. We take far too many of both. If we continue to take 4-8 transfers/JC's a year, we will fade even further into obscurity.

Don't understand this way of thinking. This baseball program is on a major downward spiral. The last 3 years we have finished 4th, 6th, and 7th in the Socon. Totally unacceptable. Glad we don't treat football this way.

I'm sorry, it sounds like you are describing UTA, though we put it all together well enough to win a share of the regular season crown, though we finished 1-2 in the conference tourney pool play. Hopefully we will both turn it around next year.

I wouldn't say that. If your talent is good it doesn't matter. Remember, there are only 11.7 scholarships for 25 roster spots. There is a lot of turnover in baseball because of that. It is more rare for a baseball player to play four years at one school than any other sport.

It's about the quality of those players. All of our JCs and transfers contribute. The past 2 seasons, 4 of our 9 drafted players were one or the other.

This year, our LF and CF were both transfers. The Sr CF was the team leader and although his bat wasn't what it could have been. his defense was indispensable. (no errors in his college career) He also produced runs with walks, SBs and sacs. Our 3B was a transfer and, really, we had no one that could fill his shoes on the field (found that out during our error prone 7 game run). Our 1B is also a transfer with one year left.
You just have to have a good mix of your recruits and transfers/JUCOs that gel on the field and as a team. These guys also allow you to RS future players and give the younger starters time to develop.

(not all of these transfers/JUCOs are from the same year)

RE: Appalachian and GSU baseball seasons end today - eagleskins - 05-27-2013 09:40 PM

Been the opposite with GSU. Our high school players always turn out the best. Last year we had a 1st, 2nd, and 4th round picks. All high school guys. Of course, it says even more that we finished sixth in the conference with said talent. Our swing in miss ratio on transfers/JC guys is well over 50 percent.
