The BE has officially been brought back to earth. No more ridiculous nation wide conference BS.

I wish that they (alone) would have stayed in the BE....just for the irony of it all.

RE: SDSU to stay in MWC - CardinalBlackTrojan - 01-17-2013 12:42 PM

So what happens now to Houston, UCF, East Carolina, Tulane, SMU, Memphis, and Temple? It seems there would be little chance that they would go back to C-USA. Temple could probably go back to the MAC.

I have a feeling we are going to see the birth of a new conference involving what's left of the Big East.

Kudos to SDSU. Smart thinking.

What will happen? In a sense they just reformed CUSA, but cut ties with the dead weight. What will happen is they will add two more former CUSA brethern (USM and Tulsa) and make a go of things with a better TV deal.

Good luck holding onto that lineup once the SEC and/or Big Ten and/or Big XII move on the ACC.

My thoughts exactly. If UConn and Cincy stay in the league long enough to see 2015, I will be surprised to say the least.

As for hearing someone say they dropped the dead weight of CUSA...they invited Tulane...yea, the Tulane that brough 32,000 people to their football games for the season and hasn't been even respectable in anything besides baseball in a millennium. If they had added USM then that conference would be very good, instead they chased markets again and came up holding a turd sandwich.

RE: SDSU to stay in MWC - GoApps70 - 01-17-2013 02:20 PM

32,000 for the entire season - wow

RE: SDSU to stay in MWC - Native Georgian - 01-17-2013 02:25 PM

SDSU made the right decision to stay in the Mtn. and I don't think anyone blames them for doing that.

The Big East's plans for the short-term future are unclear. Obviously, no current or incoming member of the conference will turn down an invite to join the ACC. Unless and until those invitations come, the league's agenda is to negotiate a separation from the C7 and then a TV contract for the 2014-15 season. I suspect the nBE will try to bring in Army as a football-only (and, of course, ECU for all-sports. That can't happen so long as the C7 is still in the picture. But that should be done in a few months) and then go with a 12/10 set-up for the time-being.

As for future-poaching by the 5 power conferences, there's nothing anybody can do to prevent that. Even if Boise and SDSU both joined the Big East, that vulnerability wouldn't change. In the meantime, the only sensible thing for each school to do is to continually make improvements in academics, athletics, and facilities, so as to be ready for the next round. Everything else is beyond our control, anyway, so what's the use in worrying about it? If/when the nBE loses some of its current/incoming members, I'd bet that it will not be too difficult to find replacements.

Double Wow! That is just shy of the average of one game at home for us Go App '70. And they are in a large market......a school with a long and storied tradition. And this is the NBE material? Oh sorry.....forgot......it is all about market size......even though no one in the market gives a crap about the team located there!

RE: SDSU to stay in MWC - GoApps70 - 01-17-2013 02:35 PM

The new nBE football schools are happy to stay together because for one thing it sets them up on the shelve ready to be taken by the Power 5 at any second. Talk of them doing anything but basically staying together now seems like wishful thinking by other schools.

There are very few incoming Big East schools with a shot at a power 5 league.

Some will be taken, maybe not the newest members right away, but certainly some of them soon.

Very very slim odds that anyone moves up into the Rich 5.

Much more likely that the SEC and Big 10 go bargain hunting if Big XII successfully raids the ACC. Once you skim off Clemson, Florida State, UNC, NC State, Virginia Tech it gets pretty difficult to justify the ACC being a contract conference... or has everyone forgotten what happened to the Big East?

Those teams will probably be replaced from BE schools if not MWC schools though.

Doesn't mean they'll keep the fat TV deal nor the contract bowl deal with the Orange.

SDSU paying Big West $1.5 million without having played a game there.

What's interesting is that according to Forbes the SEC made the least amount of money per member than even the ACC. They better get a new Tv deal done soon if they are going to compete money wise.
