Glass Bowl Renovation/Expansion - Boca Rocket - 01-13-2013 12:33 PM

Would love to see a long-term multi-phase plan put together for GB renovation/expansion that addresses all aspects including fans, players, media, multi-use. Things like enhanced tailgating experience, visitor locker rooms, restrooms, seating(maybe chairback everywhere everywhere), concessions/dining, physical plant, visitor center/Rocket gear store, etc.
FAU's new stadium includes a Subway Subs that services campus everyday. I personally would like to see another 6,000-7,000 seats added. That's bigger but not out of UT's potential ability to draw.

Interesting to see what UT's master plan has in mind for the GB

RE: Glass Bowl Renovation/Expansion - DetroitRocket - 01-13-2013 01:17 PM

I think we're talking at least $20 million to do what the GB needs.

Last one I was really aware of was when the Press Tower was built.
If that's it, then a new one needs to be developed and start to be implemented.

Again if done in phases, you don't have to have one big chunk, and make
investments that impact the revenue side.

First and foremost - REDO THE EAST SIDE! It is an embarrassment.

Along with it some media facility that can get better shots of the of the Press Tower side instead of alway shooting the deadest corner of the GB.
Would also like to see the team entrance improved.

Lots of great ideas for UT officials to process . . . and then act upon!

Like I mentioned previously, I hope they add some recognition for our bowl games, and (better) recognition for our past MAC Championships.

Something like this would be neat for our bowl games (this is what UConn has).

Seeing that '04 MCB banner made me throw up in my mouth a little...

Yeh, but watching Kaczur throw that uppercut without first pulling the guy's jersey over his head was something I'll never forget from that game - other than our freshman QB playing in his last game for Toledo.

I think Kazur was mixing it up with the D-lineman from Boston College, not UConn... We retaliated from a lot of garbage that BC was pulling on their pass rush...

Akron built their 30,000 seat Infocision Stadium with a 65 million pricetag... I think UT can do an extensive makeover/expansion on the GB in the 30-40 million range ... That is, if no corners are cut and the project is done in a first class manner... With the Savage makeover and Fettermen facility in place, I would assume that the GB along with the Larimer are next on the drawing board subsequently incorporating that design with the new alumni pavillion ...

How about a row of suites (inside/outside) around the stadium like 5/3 Field, and build the upper decks on top of them. With concession and bathroom facilities on those levels so the fans upstairs don't have to go all the way downstairs.

Depending on the prevailing winds you don't necessarily need to go...er...nevermind.

Even if that was only done on the eastside that would be a big improvement.

At Maryland, I think Byrd Stadium is a dump, but the Gossett Team House at the end of the stadium is a great facility. Aside from having all the modern bells and whistles (which is why it sticks out so much in such a run-down stadium), it also has a tunnel going directly from the locker room to the field. It's a really nice facility and having a direct entrance to the stadium is the best use of space if you aren't going to have stands in the end zone.

RE: Glass Bowl Renovation/Expansion - indianasniff - 01-14-2013 08:29 AM

The Savage renovation happened because the glass Bowl bonds were getting paid off. Unless us fans start making some SIGNIFICANT donations this type of renovation is not happening until Savage is paid for. As for incremental fixes, the Alumni Pavilion is an Awesome addition to the fan experience. The new bookstore and Gradkowskis as well.

Toledo spends too much time wishing to be something else. celebrate who you are and enjoy it. We are rockets. we have limited resources and we have to live within them. no reason to build more seats when we do not sell then ones we have throughout the season...including November

So I guess Toledo fans can just relegate themselves to the fact that WE ARE WHO WE ARE and not strive to improve on what we have... I know it's an undeniable fact that Toledo will never be on a level with the o$u and Notre Dames of the world in regards to facility expenditures/coaching salaries, etc... But at least keep pace with universities like James Madison ( 60 million dollar stadium expansion, and approval of a new 88 million b-ball arena)... Maybe a multi-million dollar expansion and redo of the GB isn't warranted at this time... Regardless, maybe spruce up the stadium cosmetically with new paint on trim and handrails, getting rid of the chainlink fence, and the small-time concession setup under the east side deck... ...

Since the entire lower bowl, except for the south end-zone, is new from 1990, much of the stadium is in excellent shape. As others have said, fix the east side. If you tear down the east upper deck, and match the west side stands, that would be a big improvement. Then you would have new lights, fans closer to the field and restrooms under the stands like the west side, which is quite nice.

If the seating continued to fill in the entire south end of the stadium, you would have a perfect bowl configuration at the height of the current west stands. Capacity would then probably be around 33,000.

Larimer is next to be renovated/expanded along with the facilities at Scott Park.
