Ask the Pitt fans, they've lived here the last few years.

If you include living in the outskirts of the city - sure, but I don't believe it should be considered a major travel destination.

It started with the first comment.

Is there a more self-loathing city/environs than the Birmingham area?

There's also Alabama Adventure, Vulcan, BRC & Historic Legion Field :sarcasm

The only thing I hate is that it always keeps coming back to CRM (important as it was) as if that is all that ever happened in Birmingham instead of moving forward to create a new identity. Other southern cities have created new identities & moved forward from those days.

Other cities have also used the Civil Rights movement as a tourist attraction. More successfully than Birmingham has. While Birmingham hides it in shame, other cities look at the Movement as an accomplishment and promotes it.

2113 looks to be a big anniversary year. In addition to the 1963 Civil Rights movement, it is also the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy Assassination. It will be the 45th anniversary of King and RFK assassinations, the 40th anniversary of a lot of Watergate events and most importantly, the 35th anniversary of the first UAB basketball game.

Perhaps those other southern cities are not surrounded by suburbs and a state that wishes their largest city would just disappear, except for the jobs it provides. B'ham is to Alabama as UAB is to the UA System with the state legislature in the position of the UA BOT.

Amen Smaug. I haven't lived in B'ham for 15 years but would love to move back some day, hopefully when my twins enter UAB in 6 years. I'd most likely live downtown, like I do here in Mobile.

:03-banghead

I didn't get your joke at first, until I saw my mistake. Apparently I had a long New Years celebration.

But that does remind me that it will also be the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg, and the Emancipation Proclamation.

Bamanblazerfan will have a busy year.

Amen.

I've been trying to get back for the past three years with varying degrees of failure.

When I think of cities I'd like to visit, Birmingham isn't in my list. To me there's just not enough worth traveling for. No pro sports teams. Not a big military history. Sure, there's the civil rights stuff, but not too sure how many people would come from afar to walk through a museum that's bankrupt. I just don't see a big tourist draw.

They mentioned it because the political correctness side of it outweighs the factual side of it.

Best part of Birmingham is its people and our Southern Hospitality, that amd the amazing food and beautiful churches.

Southern Hospitality isn't what it's cracked up to be.

I disagree.

I've been several times, and think it's a great museum. The first time I went, I fully expected to be bludgeoned with white guilt, but it wasn't like that at all.

RE: Birmingham makes 'Today' show list of six hot places to travel in 2013... - the_blazerman - 01-01-2013 08:59 PM

Not saying it isn't a good museum, because I wouldn't know, but I don't believe that it by itself is a travel destination reason.

And certainly not the 6th best destination overall because of the Civil Rights Commemoration.

RE: Birmingham makes 'Today' show list of six hot places to travel in 2013... - Smaug - 01-01-2013 09:05 PM

Well, the Today Show disagrees.

Yep, & I don't watch the Today Show or NBC.

FWIW:

The other destinations that made Maxwell's list were Miami, Florida, Pittsburgh, Penn., Marseille, France, and the countries of Nicaragua, and Croatia.
