No. 88 - Mean Green Robbed In Austin By The Zebras
For six weeks of the season, North Texas was ranked No. 1 in the nation in I-AA and on Sept. 24, 1988, the 2-0 Mean Green went to Austin for a battle against Texas. The Mean Green led at the half 14-7 and extended that lead to 21-7 early in the 3rd quarter.
After pushing their lead to 24-20 on a Keith Chapman field goal with 1:38 left, the Mean Green was on their way to beating Texas for the first time in school history.
The Longhorns had one last drive. It ended with controversy as Texas QB Shannon Kelley found Keith Cash in the corner of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Or did he?
Cash leapt out of the end zone to pull the ball down, but his feet appeared to never come back in bounds. The Mean Green argued their case to the SWC officials, but to no avail. The play stood, and the Longhorns escaped with the 27-24 win.
What should have been the biggest win in school history, turned into the biggest controversial ending in school history.

UNT played threee SWC teams in '88. Beat Texas Tech 29-24, beat Rice 33-17 and this fiasco at UT that should have been a win.

You have to beat a Power $ix team by 3 touchdowns, in order to win by 3 points.
If the game is close, get ready for a phantom holding call, etc, to screw the perceived underdog.
Beware of SBC refs-- they want to move up to the $EC and Big 12, etc, and will screw you even worse than the money conference officials.
We've lost several games this way (Virginia, Bama, UK)
