Florida Tech to start football in 2013 - FloridaJag - 06-02-2011 10:39 AM

Football fever is spreading in Florida. Ave Maria, Stetson and now Florida Tech. UWF will decide in a few days.

Since there are no Division II or Division III football-playing colleges in Florida, Tech had originally planned to begin competition at the second-tier NAIA level. Edward Waters in Jacksonville, Webber International in Babson Park and Ave Maria University in Naples, which will play its first-ever game in September, compete at the NAIA level.

"The NAIA is not out but we are aggressively exploring the GSC,” Thomas wrote.

I thought I read somewhere a while back that UCF used to be Florida Tech or FIT...

UCF was Florida Technological University, and commonly referred to as "Florida Tech" from its establishment in 1963 until December 1978. The only other public _TUs are in Texas, Tennessee, and Michigan. A handful of private schools are similarly named.

The private FIT was founded in 1958 but did not take its current name until 1966, so for more than a decade there were two schools that could answer to "Florida Tech".

My stepmother graduated from FIT, and they are a small small school.

When I lived in Central Florida a long time ago, we referred to what is now UCF as "FTU".

Florida Tech today is in Melbourne, but has been more commonly referred to as Florida Institute of Technology (FIT).

NPR once made a reference to the "Florida - Louisiana border" in a news story. It's been a while since there's been one of those.
