Are you guys replacing Denver? - 1845 Bear - 03-10-2011 01:44 PM

Just curious. It seems that would help minimize travel cost if you added another member in the Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma region. Are there any thoughts of this or is the spot being held for a 1-AA jump up all-sports member?

WAC is waiting for the next available 1-AA not the SBC !!!

The league has not shown much interest in taking a I-AA unless they were already a member for other sports or it was essential to the league's survival. Right now I'd say the league is in no hurry to grab an FCS. There is no one in Oklahoma or Arkansas to take. Oklahoma doesn't have any FCS schools and the two in Arkansas are too underfunded with inadequate facilities to be considered. I don't believe any Louisiana FCS would be considered even if they were willing to spend the money to move. In Texas I could see Texas State get in the mix but I don't sense any urgency to go that way. La.Tech would probably sail to approval if they were to come to the conclusion that Sun Belt makes more sense than recent SLC graduates in Texas and a far flung western collection.

Instead of adding another football school, what about adding another 1-AAA school like UALR?

10 football, 12 basketball

There is a school in the SBC West footprint that is....

1) Located in the #61 TV market

2) Has an 11.4 million budget

3) Has a 4 year RPI average in baseball of #61

4) Has a 5 year RPI average in basketball of #108

5) Last season, average attendance in basketball of 4,662

6) Would accept an invite immediately, unconditionally

RE: Are you guys replacing Denver? - Mean Green Matt - 03-10-2011 03:44 PM

10 is not the optimal number for football...

I think we need to move to 12 all-sports members. If USA was not adding football I would say just replace Denver with a school like UALR and have 9 football and 12 basketball....but they are.

why is Baylor looking to jump ship and join the growing SBC?

I assume you mean Oral Roberts in Tulsa, OK who would save a ton on travel and would be making a lateral move RPI wise.

We aren't. I just find it an interesting thing to consider and have friends with UNT ties.

If the TV contract isnt that great to begin with, saving travel cost is a huge financial benefit and adding a school like ORU or others who fit in the footprint makes sense.

10 worked for the Big 10 for 40 years, the Pac-10 for 30 and the SEC for 26. It is very manageable.

Especially for cash strapped mid-major budgets. Getting 9 home & homes every 2 years helps. You then only have 3 non-con games and it helps do 2 things:
a- Increase revenue from more home games
b- Drive up the come play at a big school for $$$$ fee as there are fewer games to go around

And I just don't see a lot of revenue from a SBC championship game. Some, but I don't think enough to offset cutting the pie two more ways.

There would be revenue from a championship game. However, the cost to put it on would be more than the revenue. Therefore we would lose money. Look at C-USA.

I guess I should have written "profit after expenses" as there would be revenue. Just not enough

Bingo!

Only, their lateral move would be for basketball. In baseball, they would be going from the outhouse to the penthouse as The Summit languishes around #27 in RPI rankings and the SBC is a yearly top-10 league.

Curious. You know they would accept and imvitation immediately because............. ?:odie:

Where would you rather be, The Summit or the SBC?

I don't pretend to know what they are thinking at ORU but the financial equation and exposure are probably better in the belt due to travel distances and more "name awareness" since most of the belt plays football against bcs teams and we only see summit teams in march.

It depends on where Oral Roberts wants to be, not where we think they should be.
