FB: FIU looks to hire UConn’s Orlando as defensive coordinator - FIU Panther Fan - 01-20-2011 02:29 PM FIU looks to hire UConn’s Orlando as defensive coordinator Quote:Orlando last served as UConn’s defensive coordinator and inside-linebackers coach, and for the Golden Panthers to lure a coordinator from a BCS conference to FIU would be unprecedented. I'm not sure unprecedented is the word. Randy Edsall took the Maryland job, so of course his former staff will be easier to acquire and/or more likely to leave. I can think of two examples off the top of my head from similar situations. 1. Clint Bowen (DC at Kansas) to Western Kentucky, and a year later North Texas. 2. Mike Canales (OC at USF) to North Texas. Okay, I will give you Canales.... good reputation and won. Bowen was ran out of Kansas with the rest of the staff. He has had some successful years, but he didn't come to North Texas from a program that just played in a BCS bowl game. What's this "run out of Kansas" crap. He and other assistants left due to a head coaching change. Yes, he had several very successful years with the Jayhawks. Bowen, the longest-tenured member of former Kansas coach Mark Mangino’s staff, was one of nine assistants let go following new Kansas coach Turner Gill’s arrival in December. In nine seasons at KU, Bowen served as coach of the tight ends, running backs, and safeties, as well as special-teams coordinator and co-defensive coordinator, before being promoted to defensive coordinator prior to the 2008 season. RE: FB: FIU looks to hire UConn’s Orlando as defensive coordinator - FIUFanatic - 01-20-2011 03:24 PM I think that would be a real good signing by FIU and Mario Cristobal. Orlando was very successful at UConn as well, and we are hoping it gets done soon... Go FIU!! You are right...he didn't come to North Texas from a team that played in a BCS bowl game....he came from Western Kentucky. In all seriousness, Bowen does fit that situation less than Canales, I'll give you that. BUT....Bowen did happen to be the DC for Kansas during their Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech (24-21) in January 2008.... Transition....transmission, his defense was terrible! Western Kentucky did not play in a BCS bowl last season. Canales on the other hand would be comparative. RE: FB: FIU looks to hire UConn’s Orlando as defensive coordinator - FIUFan - 01-20-2011 03:31 PM UConn blog in the Courant is reporting it's a done deal; just waiting on MC to return from a recruiting trip to make the official announcement. Coincidentally (or not) two 3 star DL have also comitted to FIU within the previous 24 hours. Also, Todd Orlando has been with the UConn program for 12 years. So definately not some fly-by-night hire here. True, but what was the average points per game given up by his defense that season? Even when Kansas was winning, his defense gave up tons of points and yards. So no, BCS DC in name yes. I don't see the two as comparative. Give FIU some credit if this happens for them. We like him and are glad he's a part of our Mean Green staff. Get back to us with your hires of the highest paid OC and DC in the conference (Your words, remember ? ). With Cord. or assits. coaches having escalating clauses, my guess it won't be. But then again if we are still in the top third in the SBC in asst. salaries and recruiting budgets with our athletic budget, that's a major commitment. How long has UNT had over 25,000 students and athletic fees? Congratulations for finally not being on the cheap! Oh and by the way, does Brett Vito have to tell you everything or do you actually have some knowledge of the inner workings of your program? Uhhh...Uhhhh...Uhhhh RE: FB: FIU looks to hire UConn’s Orlando as defensive coordinator - FIUFanatic - 01-20-2011 03:40 PM (01-20-2011 03:31 PM)FIUFan Wrote: UConn blog in the Courant is reporting it's a done deal; just waiting on MC to return from a recruiting trip to make the official announcement. Seems like a perfect fit for our young, aggresive style of defense. I don't lurk around the AD's office begging for scraps of info if that's what you mean. Usually when we hear something in confidence that's the way it stays until it's oficially released. Thanks, I have all the knowledge I need about the inner workings of our program. I'll leave it to folks like yourself to play the part of "ultimate insider". Good for FIU, but if Randy Edsall had not left, FIU would not even have a shot at the guy...and Connecticut did not even finish in the top 25 of the final BCS rankings. I'm not saying it is not an accomplishment, just bringing it back to reality. Uhh, UConn went to a BCS bowl this year (though I bad-mouthed that selection recently; Boise was a much better team) and the defense was ranked 35th nationally overall, playing AQ level competition all year. So yeah, I'd say that's something to crow about (but nothing like brick-by-brick updates on UNT's stadium. ) |
