If you were the President in a non-AQ Conference - FIUFan - 05-18-2010 01:40 PM

Let's stop speculating about who may go where. If you were the President in a non-AQ Conference and you were up for a vote of schools, what do you place as you highest priority? Choose your top 2.

Market size & TV advertising. $$$$ drives the bus.

Where did you get all that matters ? Poll says priorities and my opinion is that market size & TV advertising $$ are big priorities in expansion.

I voted success in major programs with a big emphasis on the (s) in programs. Having a good 1A football program is not enough. I want quality hoops to go with it.

I voted attendance as my #2. Not that attendance is in and of itself all that important, but because it reflects a lot of other elements of an athletic programs health indirectly.

Academics #1
Athletic success #2 - you can have teams in big markets in the Non-AQ conferences but you still aren't going to get big TV contracts unless those teams have success athletically (look at the Sun Belt with UNT, FAU, and FIU all in large media markets).

Harvard and Yale to the Big Televen ?

I voted success on the field and academics.

RE: If you were the President in a non-AQ Conference - FIUFan - 05-20-2010 09:28 AM

So far the lead vote getter is 1.) Athletic Success (but I think you'd expect that from fan boards), followed by 2.) Academics and 3.) Market Size. So as we move down the food-chain and the non-AQ's begin their realignments (if neccessary), these are the criteria we will be looking for.

So with this in mind, does the Sun Belt invite (given neccessity again) an App. St., Texas St., Ga St., Ga. Southern, etc.

I like App St.'s athletics but don't know anything about their academics and their market region seems pretty rural. Tx. St. doesn't even play football nor does Ga. St. and Ga. Southern has its own issues. Which university has the greatest potential? I think, at the end of the day, this is the real crux of the matter.

Note: this poll has been linked to the C-USA board.

i believe Ga. State will be playing Alabama this season, as part of their inaugural season. Texas State DOES play football.

Everyone on here knows my opinions on expansion. if we go the 1-AA route, I take App State and Texas State.

Yep... Georgia State is coached by Bill Curry and will be playing not only @ Alabama but @ South Alabama too, just three weeks prior to the UA game.

Inaugural season of what? D-II, D-IAA non-scholly, D-IAA, D-IA? Have they ever played a game before at any level? If not, then them playing UA is a travesty.

They're D-IAA (FCS) and will be competing in the Colonial Athletic Conference. My guess is they're doing Coach Bill Curry a "favor" by playing them since C/C is a former Alabama coach.

yeah its pretty sad that they will be playing Bama in their first ever season. all the sports radio shows have been slamming the Tide for that one.

There in lies a problem. For CUSA, market size would be a big factor. For the Sunbelt I don't think it should be. Bowling Green, Monroe, Jonesboro, Troy, and to a lesser extent Mobile, Lafayette, and Murfreesboro are relatively small college towns. Yes some of those are part of larger metro areas, but they don't really "deliver" those larger markets. So any program we add for market size will not significantly change our TV viewership or TV revenue potential. Unless we threw out several small market teams and replaced them all with large market teams that is not going to change and as such I don't think that market size is very relevant to our choice.

Will a win over Georgia State even count towards bowl eligibility for Alabama? I know an FCS school has to offer pretty close to the full complement of scholarships for an FBS opponent to count them, but will Georgia State make it there?

Does it matter? Do you see Alabama not getting to 6 wins not counting Georgia State?

i wonder if South Alabama will be asked to play Alabama or Auburn before Troy.
