New bowl game for Sun Belt??? - CardinalBlackTrojan - 10-08-2009 10:56 PM

I know there has been talk for months now about the Bowl for the Cure in Orlando potentially matching up an SBC opponent against a CUSA opponent, but it never became official.

The Bowl for the Cure website says: "This nationally televised game will feature a team from Conference USA against a team from the Sun Belt Conference, played at Bright House Stadium in Orlando, FL on December 18, 2010."

http://www.curebowl.com/about/about-cure-bowl.html

If there has already been a thread on this then I missed it, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people haven't seen this yet.

There hasn't even been anything on the Sun Belt Conference website about it.

It's ironclad.

There was no sponsorship last year. I have not heard of anyone coming on board to date. It still has to be approved by the NCAA, which is far from being a slam dunk at this point. There will be a new bowl game at Yankee stadium, I doubt the NCAA adds 2 new bowls. There is talk that the International bowl may go away.

I hope to see this bowl come to fruition.

Won't happen.

I figure International is gone.
NY will happen.
New game for Dallas is 50-50, there simply isn't much of a way to get another bowl certified beyond that.

we need to push for the GMAC Bowl. If we could snag that bowl for our champion, and send our #2 to New Orleans, I would be satisfied for now.

ultimately I'd like to see us with 3 or 4 bowls. I don't think we will be able to progress any further under the current structure. Conference USA or the MAC would have to collapse for us to move further than that.

If you start plugging the pieces together of who is going where and look at the certification rules for bowls (to get certified you have to contract for a team or conference that has averaged enough 7 win teams to fill the slot, or you must get a back-up), I think the pieces fall together for the Sun Belt to sign one more game which is the most we can sign without someone being OUR back-up.

I think CUSA jumping to take Hawaii to keep from losing ground coupled with ACC going to Indy means we have an excellent shot at either Mobile or Eagle Bank or a combo deal where we split between them.

On paper, yes. But have you factored Wright Waters into that scenario?

Yea, lets push the NO Bowl to the side for the GMAC bowl. No matter that the NO Bowl has been the best thing that the Belt has had going for them since football inception. Also, I am sure that most players and fans would much prefer Mobile to that decadent New Orleans.

Having been to both for sporting events... I MUCH prefer Mobile to New Orleans.

I doubt that's a very common preference, but I liked Mobile a hell of a lot more.

The NY bowl is in same boat Cure Bowl has. Neither has a sponsor and neither is approved by NCAA (since NCAA approves bowls in APR).

You will find both bowls will be approved bc another bowl will go under which we don't know of right now.

I have never been to the GMAC bowl but I have been to Mobile several times including the Sun Belt basketball tournament and I frankly like NO a hell of a lot better than Mobile. However, Mobile is certainly a great location for the Belt and I wouldn't mind going to a bowl game there if NT was involved.

RE: New bowl game for Sun Belt??? - Krocker Krapp - 10-10-2009 12:30 AM

The bowl in New York City has the backing of Big East #4, Big 12 #7, Notre Dame as a back-up option, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and the most storied franchise in the history of professional sports. Sponsorship will not be a problem. Just look at the Yankees annual payroll. Or the mayor's bank account and business contacts. Money is never an object for these people. There is no way the Big 12 would enter into this deal, or Michael Bloomberg would speak at the introductory press conference, if the event's backing was not an iron clad lock.

Now, based on the MWC strangely signing with the Independence Bowl, I think the New Mexico Bowl might be in danger of going under but that does not mean another game will automatically take its place. People have to remember that Army and Navy have signed a series of four one-year deals apiece with the Armed Forces, Eagle Bank, Emerald, and Poinsettia games. This has pushed the WAC into an Emerald/Poinsettia hybrid arrangement and CUSA most likely into an Armed Forces/Eagle Bank split deal. But there is one think being overlooked.

What happens if Army and/or Navy fails to become eligible in any of the four years of their deals? There need to be 6-6 teams sitting around that those bowls can grab as emergency replacements. In addition, how often is SEC #9 (really #10 most years), Big 12 #8 (really #9 many years), or ACC #9 really going to be eligible? Those games need to have back-up options with 6-6 records waiting out there for a worst case scenario. I think the Sun Belt should just go hard after the GMAC spot currently reserved for ACC #9 rather than Orlando.

RE: New bowl game for Sun Belt??? - arkstfan - 10-10-2009 05:27 PM

International will go away. Big East has no interest in going back and no one else wants to deal with the players needing passports and getting equipment through customs.

New Mexico will need a back-up and I expect it to be the MAC.

The NY bowl has 2 decent BCS lined up, the Yankees have agreed to kick in something like 16 mil over 4 years to help. They will find a major sponsorship. They are as close as you can be to a lock.. Dallas and Orlando are both working on a game. I put odds at neare 50/50 for either or both. Dallas is working on big10 and big 12 #8.. Orlando had a deal last year for CUSA/Sunbelt #2. International folding up would help both of these bowls chances. If orlando finds sponsor and get's approved.. Sunbelt will end up #1 in Nawlins and #2 in O'town. Cusa will have 5 Liberty, Haw, orlando, (armedforces/Congressional) and likely St pete.

Bottom line is all 6 BCS will maintain or improve a bit. Mwc improves a bit, and everyone else scrambles for leftovers.
