President Obama is expected to unveil a plan that would give the government new powers to seize key companies whose failure jeopardizes the financial system.

The plan would give the government new powers to seize key companies whose failure jeopardizes the financial system, as well as creation of a watchdog agency to look out for consumers' interests.

Reporting from Washington -- The Obama administration this week will propose the most significant new regulation of the financial industry since the Great Depression, including a new watchdog agency to look out for consumers' interests.

Under the plan, expected to be released Wednesday, the government would have new powers to seize key companies -- such as insurance giant American International Group Inc. -- whose failure jeopardizes the financial system. Currently, the government's authority to seize companies is mostly limited to banks. ---MORE---

Just curious. Is there anything this administration could do that would worry you?

Let's keep in mind, we're still in Iraq, we're still in Afghanistan, the Patriot Act has been ramped up, taxes are up, deficit spending is up...

I'll play:

Would he have a chance to? Obviously, Robert is Dem partisan and will probably agree with most of the party's platform and ideology.

But with 95% of the threads on this board being "bash Obama for anything we can even remotely tie to him and spin in as detrimental of a manner as possible" - where would that leave any democrat a chance to object? I'm an independent who has voted once for a democrat for President in my life, and it wasn't Obama, and I still can't even have a voice here. You either hate Obamagog Hussein, or you're a "far left liberal nutcase communist marxist atheist islamofascist" around here. Again, this isn't an objective political discussion board - it's a "bash Obama/libruhls or GTFO" board. Just look at the the first page of threads. It's ridiculous.

+1

Notice he proposes this BS on the same day the CBO Report on his Health Care Socialism gets shredded. $1 Trillion only covers 16 million uninsured....

Lots of buzz about Obama's pitch to the American Medical Association on the need to overhaul the nation's health care system -- and about a non-partisan report that may complicate the president's efforts to achieve that goal this year. A preliminary analysis by the Congressional Budget Office finds that one of the major health care proposals, a bill drafted by Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., would cost as much as $1 trillion over the next decade to insure an additional 16 million people. Currently 46 million Americans lack health insurance.

BTW, on topic, I don't care how ridiculously partisan you are, this is a GOOD thing:

Quote:In addition, the administration wants to impose regulation over the market for derivatives -- the murky financial contracts used to hedge risky investments -- including new reporting and disclosure requirements. Institutions that originate loans would be required to retain 5% of the credit risk when the loans are turned into securities.

Long overdue, and I'm not sure that 5% is enough.

It should be at least 25-30%, but all that does is put more money on insurance companies who will issue the coverage on the risk.

It does beg the "AIG question" - how much those companies are required to reserve for loss payouts. It gets into a bunch of actuarial math too, and gets really technical.

Ears burning? Guilty conscience?

I never said not allowed to speak, but not given any respect is a fair statement.
