Wow, 80K kronor - DrTorch - 04-17-2009 11:45 AM

I read this story and I was stunned. Churches in Sweden take in 70-80K kronor/year? That's somewhere under $10,000. For the entire church for the entire year!

Is this really an economy that we compare the US to?

STOCKHOLM (AFP) – While the global economic crisis has forced many to cut back on spending, one elderly worshipper in Sweden left over 9,000 euros in cash at her local church collection, an official said Tuesday.

The unidentified woman, believed to be in her seventies, made the gift last Sunday after pastors appealed for donations for international aid projects, Krister Klint, a verger at the Caroli Church in the southwestern Swedish town of Boraas, told AFP.

"When the service was over, she came forward and said in broken Swedish that she wanted to make a donation. She had a homemade brown envelope in her hand. So she handed it over to church wardens, and they took it into the back room with the rest of the collection," Krister said.

"They opened the envelope and were shocked to find a note on which it was written '100,000 kronor' (9,200 euros, 12,200 dollars). There was a wad of money with 1,000- and 500-kronor bills," he added.

Klint told AFP the church usually collects around 70,000 to 80,000 kronor each year, but had no idea as to the identity or the whereabouts of the mystery donor.

"I've never seen her before. I'm not sure she will like all this attention, seeing as she made an anonymous donation. But surely it can't be wrong to express your joy over such a generous act?," he said.

.

And it is said regarding proper giving: "Do not let thy Right Hand know what thy Left Hand is doing".

This is so it will be good for you and it will be a gift that is only known between you and God.

This person was righteous in her giving ....

The way I have come to understand it, was that yes, the Jew's had a tax (as you called it) of 10% that they were supposed to give back to God. It wasn't necesarily money, however, but was grain, food, livestock etc.

Now under the New Covenant, we are required to give what we are called to give. If you look at the New Testament church, then people gave what was needed to make sure that no one of them was in need. We are not bound by a particular % as many churches say.

And there is that little thing of free will. No one is, under threat of law, forcing anyone to give to any church.

+1....You beat me to it.

Only governments and criminals must depend on coercion and violence to fund their activities.

No Robert .... giving to your Church means the Money will actually ALL get to the destination you paid for it to get too.

Giving the money to the Gubment means the money will land in the Pockets of Politicians who will come and steal your land to pay for their Welfare Shams and Schemes.

Church = Give when you can of what you have ...... Gubment = we will take all you have and then demand more.

You are such a lams putz 'til it is pitiful.
